Below are the New Zealand ambulance patches that I have in my collection.

Most of these patches are not for trade.  Please check out my trade list if you would like to add some New Zealand patches to your collection.

Order of St John

The Order of St John provides ambulance services to the bulk of New Zealand's population.  For more information see  www.stjohn.org.nz/products/ambulance.asp.

These patches, phased out in 2002, are used by all St Johns Ambulance Officers to indicate their level of qualification.  PTS stands for Patient Transport Service - the arm of the service that provide patient transport in non-emergency circumstances.  The Co-Responder patch is worn by Fire Service personnel trained to a basic life support level.

Moving on down the country, ambulance services are also provided by:

New Zealand Ambulance Service

New Zealand Ambulance
A small operator based in the Waikato town of Te Kauwhata.  I'm not sure if this service is still operating.

Taranaki Ambulance

The qualification patches used by the Taranaki Ambulance Service, covering one of the areas not served by St John's.
The local area health board, responsible for provision of health services in this region on the North Island's west coast, runs the ambulance service .

Wellington Free Ambulance

In New Zealand, trauma patients usually have their ambulance transportation costs covered by the Accident Compensation Corporation and medical patients will find themselves paying for their transportation.  However, in the greater Wellington area the Wellington Free Ambulance provides all services at no charge to the patient.  It is the only free ambulance service in the southern hemisphere.  For more information see  www.wfa.org.nz.

These patches, introduced in 2001, indicate the officer's role in the service and their level of qualification.

Old Patch
Wellington Free - Old
Until the patches above were introduced, this was the only patch being worn by WFA officers.

Qualification Patches (Unissued)

These patches were designed to indicate the officers' level of qualification, but never saw the light of day.
The story that I've been told is that an industrial dispute sprang up between the management and the staff over who would be responsible for having the patches sewn on to the uniforms.

Nelson/Marlborough Health Service

Nelson Marlborough
Another small ambulance service run by an area health board, this time at the northern tip of the South Island.  With the size of the service and the number of staff being so low, the service does not have the need for qualification patches.
