Introduction

Having been studying computer science part-time at Victoria University for the last four years, I have now graduated with a BSc (Computer Science) and am returning to the workforce with more software skills and theoretical knowledge, adding depth to my practical experience.

Most of my work experience has involved Windows and PC networks, however I am now more comfortable in a Unix-style environment, as I use Debian GNU/Linux at home and was using NetBSD as a student at the University.

Skills & Experience

I have accumulated a wide variety of skills and experiences from my time at TNS Cablecraft as well as from experimenting and configuring my network and Linux systems at home. I try to set my network up in a similar way to a likely commercial situation, which helps me understand systems more deeply. For example, I have a DNS name server configured on my 5 PC network, which could be considered overkill.

I read a lot, and I tend to remember a large proportion of what I read. As well as books, I read a lot on newsgroups and mailing lists, which, combined with more formal sources such as my University and Polytech studies, gives me a good general knowledge about principles and concepts - what can and can't be done - and some reasonable idea of where to go for details. When I do need the details, if I don't know them, I am good at reading and understanding the documentation.

I regularly get asked for help with all manner of computer issues by friends and relations. They, as well as the many users I have helped while at TNS Cablecraft, generally report that I do a good job in a friendly manner.

I have been involved with Interface, the Computer club at Victoria University since it started in 2000, including holding the roles of Secretary, President, Vice-President and Treasurer, and was Newsletter Editor for a while for the Voyagers' Club gaining some experience with Pagemaker.

I have a driver's licence covering classes 1, 2 and 4.
