A track voltage higher than 1.5 volts will provide enough current to activate the LED and turn the output transistor on. A train crossing the small section of isolated track in Forward or Reverse direction will activate the detector. Optionally connecting the option diode will also cause the transistor to turn on if track power is reversed. The track section needs to be only 2 sleeper spaces long and this provides support for it. The level of the track on this section must be the same as the powered tracks beside it or activation may be unreliable.
