New NZ120 items: Trackside NZ120 had a good showing of
the available kits at the convention and I
believe quite a number were ordered. Pat Eade has been busy these last 3 months and has now nearly completed
the masters for the Fiat Twinset Railcar.
This is a major kit and comes with motor, bogies
and wheels...everything except transfers. Pat is doing a pre-release
run in 4 weeks and will sell a limited
number of kits off that run. No big problems are expected as the
parts are all keyed where necessary so
that accurate speedy alignment
and soldering is assured. There are
two units on three bogies, one is powered
and there will be a corridoor divider between the units. I would think
this single piece of equipment would be a must for anyone modelling post 1955 era. Over the years the
railcars have been used on most provincial
lines in boh the North and South Islands. In 1968
some were converted to "Blue Streak" configuration. With two tone blue colour scheme. Pat is selling the
pre-release kits for $120 and expects the release
kit will sell for $135 to $140. So, your choice, remember the
quantity is limited and first in first
served. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Activity around the
Country:
Garry Gloag is developing techniques
for making NZ120 scale bush and trees. He
plans an article on it but will also have demonstrations at the Rail-X display next month. He is also
experimenting with a "greeting card" record/play sound chip (10 seconds for $13, draws 16ma at 5VDC)
for the sound of DC, DA, DX etc horns
triggered by track sensor. Also trying to emulate
prototypical wheel click-clack on a bridge using same sound device triggered by the flanges of passing
wheels...looks promising so far. These developments will hopefully be on
display at Rail-X 2002 also.
George Deans has been
active on his new layout I hear. Hopefully we
will get some more details soon. George is also detailing the Etch
Cetera Dc and Da Ready to Run stock and an
article with pictures should appear in one of the modelling publications soon.
I have designed some
PCB's for signals, block detectors and track power control. More details should be up on my
web site soon. If you are interested in
anything like this get in touch and I'll see if
my circuits will work for you.
Rail-X 2002 is at
Palmerston North showgrounds July 6 - 7th. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Southland Michael Eder <eder.c.bush@watchdog.net.nz> Has
worked out a Ballast size chart Scale to
Full Size in mm 1.0 1.5
2.0 2.5 3.0
4.0 5.0 120 180 240
300 360 480 600 If the full size ballast
is 180mm in size then the 1.5mm grade is
what you order. He has the ballast in several colours and sells ground
cover as well. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Modules extra......:
I had a query
recently about the track to track spacing and realised that we had not set a specific minimum track
spacing for track adjacent to the main
track. By inference it looks like it should be at 40mm. according to the diagram. But what it
means to say is, the center of the main
track to any interference point (tunnel, building or other locos) should be no less than 20mm. A van
or loco would not be more than 26mm.
in width and as there will be only small curves in the main through track, a minimum center to center
of 33mm is indicated (20mm plus half of
26mm) I work on a 36mm center to center on minumum radius curves and have not had any
troubles.
NOTE:- Back-scene and
end dividers can be painted in Taubmans "Waterworks" in a Satin finish, this gives it an
average sort of non-cloudy day sky cover.
Add some white nearer the bottom to give a distance effect nearer the horizon.

in Victoria, Canada has been building up an NZR layout for a number of years but ill health has struck
and he can no longer continue. He
reluctantly wants to sell the following items.
Best contact is by email initially and he can send small photos. <dkvonkanel@shaw.ca> If you don't have
internet then contact me, phone (04) 970 3042. The asking prices are very reasonable considering
some is 'new in box' however Daniel is willing to negotiate on any item.
You pay mail costs from Canada (approx $12 for a 1 kilo parcel, economy)
His ideal would be to sell all as one lot and is willing to
negatiate above C$1000, with the NZ dollar
appreciating the sooner you are in the
better.
