It's been a while...
But  progress is being made . The Rolleston Display layout has been to several shows and been the source of much interest. Because it is the model of a particular area then people relate to it more than to a fictitious and sometimes cluttered model train. Andrew, now on the Model Railway Guild executive has been tied up with that and work, but managed some Module building activity.

New NZ120 items:

Trackside NZ120 has been busy during the year and now has good stocks of most  advertised kits. The long awaited DFT has now been delivered and several have been made up and painted. reports are that they assemble well nalthough it pays to follow the instructions to get the best results. A Decal sheet for the DFT will be out in 3 to 4 weeks. The UK wagon is now close to shipping and the containers are ready. Look out for another Loco (Diesel Eleectric) kit in about 8 weeks time. For the 1940 to 1980's era. It uses a readily available "N" mechanism.

Graham Baker at GreyTrainz is also near finishing a new 56 foot Coach kitset to go with his Buildings and tree ferns. He has a web site also in preparation.

Michael Eder has been making Ground Cover and has a range of 11 colours;
Greens, Browns, Red, Yellow in fine or course. Also Ballast in Grey, Speckled and Coal in 8 different grades. In the pipe line there is also Ground foam.  He has also just got the dealer ship for Scale Shop products. They have a slow motion point motor and also have a lot of other electrical parts eg flasher kit with a Chip for the controller in it. He may soon be selling Model train and supplies under the heading of "Ace Toys Southland" Also he can supply Peco layout parts. Look for the advertisement  in the  Journal, soon.

1200mm x 1200mm (approx 7Kg)  $50
Top of the module would be 6mm MDF. The frame would be glued and screwed together for rigidity.
Legs extra:
Wooden Trestle type     $15.00 ea

Modules extra......:

There are a number of modules on the go now and one or two areas might need some attention. When you are trying to align two together, getting front and rear rails in line can be a problem as any reduction in the clamp pressure results in them falling down - Suggested fix is dowels with large holes or a  shelf on the bottom edge of the side board for the other module to rest on that holds it nearly in  alignment. Back-scene and end dividers can be painted in Taubmans "Waterworks" in a Satin finish, to suit an average sort of non-cloudy day sky cover.

--===Working With Polyurethane===--
======================================

With Thanks to Foothills Models
Rolling stock and structure kits are being made of a 2 part plastic substance known as polyurethane or urethane. Since this type of material is new to most modellers, the following tips may be an aid to working with polyurethane and some of the tips even apply to Zinc or Pewter Kits.

-=Straightening Parts:=-
Gently warm the part in hot (about dishwashing temperature) water. After a few minutes, the part will get slightly soft and will conform to any cool flat surface on which it is placed.

-=Washing Parts (Extremely Important!)
Thoroughly wash all of the parts in warm soapy water with a cleanser (like Jif or Ajax). The mold release used in production will keep the cyanoacrylate adhesive (CA) and/or paint from adhering to the part and must be removed prior to assembly. Its a good idea also to wash the parts after assembly to get off the oil found in your fingerprints.

-=Filling Holes:=-
Air bubbles are an inevitable part of the casting process. The bubble holes are easy to fix with a filler made from baking soda. Fill the hole with a drop of CA adhesive; a toothpick or a scrap piece of wire often works best. Then sprinkle  baking soda in the hole. The adhesive will quickly soak into the baking soda and will harden almost immediately. File, sand, or scrape the resulting fill flush with the surface of the model.

A List of Locomotive axle spacings for NZ120.
        With thanks to NZ Railway Model Journal, from a 1974 listing
compiled by Maurie Duston.

All dimensions are in Millimetres.          Updated 30/7/99.
----------------=====================------------
To use the table, select the locomotive, (Da for example)  note the power bogey construction, (A1A-A1A etc.). Then measuring from the front axle to the next (center) axle is 13.125 mm. Centre axle to the third is 13.125 mm. The third (last) axle of the first bogey to the first axle of the second bogey is 36.25 mm. and so on. The wheels diameter is 8.3 mm. and the centre bogey wheel is 6.25 mm in diameter.
