Catlins Rail: The story of the Catlins River Branch Railway 1879 - 1971
By A R Tyrrell
Published by Catlins Historical Society Inc
![]() This book provides an intriguing insight into the legendary branch railway that ran from Balclutha to Tahakopa. The text is particularly well researched and complemented with relevant photographs and diagrams. The role of the bush tramways in the region is also covered and the photos of these are fascinating. A chapter is devoted to townships and communities served by the railway, a feature rarely seen in railway books. Another pleasing aspect was the section on the "Working Railway" which details the evolution and operation of the line during the 92 years it was open for traffic, again an aspect often sparsely covered in other books. A Working Timetable, Gradient Diagram and infrastructure details complete this excellent publication.
