May/June News Update
The new trolley shed is now weather tight and secure, with the trolleys having moved into their new premises. The shed will be painted once we have some warmer weather. The brake survey and related repairs on diesel locomotive TR81 are now complete and an oil change has also been done. Some of the air leaks were in particularly awkward places. Box Wagon K610 made the journey to Hillside Workshops to have the steelwork blasted and painted. The result was really impressive with the frame looking like new; the heavy rust proving no match for the blasting booth. The bogies for T175 also received similar treatment. It must be the first time in many years that a 4 wheel plain bearing wagon has been refurbished at Hillside. Its arrival at the workshops caused quite a commotion. The wagon had a safe return journey to the railway. Our current focus is the refurbishment of the second door, the first one having been recently hung. Both doors have had the interior lining extensively repaired and the exterior lining replaced. The displaced door-post has been resecured and work on re-fitting the door track is about to start. Work has commenced on making the platform light operational and refurbishing a second one. Our Safety Case has been submitted to Land Transport NZ and the response to date has been positive. Remedial work on the Kerr Stuart horn guides and axle boxes is nearing completion. One axle-box was found to be cracked and has been brazed up. Historically the axles hadn't run true in relation to the frame or each other. Therefore, the work being done to re-fit the horn guide packings to correct these defects, should improve performance and reduce wear and tear. The result looks superb and paves the way for the refurbished wheels to be re-fitted. The ceiling and wall linings have been extensively heat-gunned, sanded and filled on the Katiki Station Tablet room, a real credit to Ian's patience. A contingent of members recently made the trip to Nelson to participate in the FRONZ conference. Please see the separate report for details of this. Cabling for the fire protection system for the carriage shed is now complete and installation of the hardware should commence soon. The last running day of the financial year was held on the 25th of June and proved popular with the public. It was doubtlessly helped by the fine (although frosty) weather and a supporting newspaper article. |
