ASSOCIATED BALLET THEATRE CLUB INC
COMPETITION RULES


Entry criteria

1. No person who has been taught or coached professionally by the Adjudicator (excluding seminars, dance in education programmes, associate programmes or similar) at any time during the period of two years preceding these Competitions is eligible to enter.

2. Age of competitor shall be calculated from the date of the beginning of the competition.

3. Every competitor shall state his or her date of birth on the entry form and any competitor whose age may be questioned shall produce a birth certificate if so required.

4. No person may compete in any class other than dancing classes for their specified age.

5. Competitors may submit only one entry in any one class, including duos and trios.

6. Titles of dances must be given on the entry form.  The Adjudicator will not be advised of any late titles.

7. Any female competitor entering the Variation class must also dance in the pointe section and one other i.e. Classical, Demi-Character, Character or Barefoot.  Male competitors must dance in the classical section and one other of the above.

8. To be eligible to enter the Tap Championships competitors must dance in the Tap Solo, and have won a first place in a recognised open competition.

9. The Associated Ballet Theatre Club Inc. (hereinafter called “The Club”) has the right to accept or refuse any entry as it deems fit.

10.Restricted classes are open to competitors who have never won first place in this or any other similar competition in the section in which they are competing. Entry fee will not be refunded.

Duration of the Competition

11. Competitors shall make themselves acquainted with the time set down in the programme for the judging of each class and shall report to the assistant stage manager at least ten minutes before that time.  Competitors shall compete in the order in which they are shown in the programme except at the discretion of the stage manager.

12. Competitors must provide their own music tapes.  A cassette deck and CD player will be available. A piano will not be available.

13. Dancing time per dance must be restricted as follows:  12 years and over/4 minutes or less; under 12 years/3 minutes or less.

14. If a competitor leaves the stage before completing an item the Adjudicator will mark as such, but the competitor will not be given a second chance to perform that same item except at the discretion of the Adjudicator.

15. The adjudicator’s decision if FINAL.

Trophies/Cups

16. All trophies and cups donated for competitions or as special prizes become the property of the Club.  The Club reserves the right to vary conditions recommended by the donor as may be considered desirable by the Club.

17. Challenge trophies remain the property of the Club and are held by the winners for one year.  The right to allocate additional trophies is reserved by the Club.

General

18. The Club reserves the right to hold these Competitions on additional days, to divide or cancel classes in any way it deems desirable and to award additional medals if the Club considers the number so warrants it.

19. No food or drink is to be taken side stage.  Smoking is strictly forbidden anywhere in the theatre or backstage.  This is a City Council By-Law.

20. The Associated Ballet Theatre Club reserves all rights in the conduct and administration of Competitions held by the club.

PACANZ CRITERIA FOR MODERN

 
~ 2011 ~


CRITERIA FOR MODERN DANCE AWARD

A. Competitors shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1 October 2011

B. Each competitor shall perform in three classes during the preliminary round:

      1. Modern/Jazz

      2. Contemporary

      3. Master Class, as would be used for an audition. No audience observation.

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more.

D. There will be a semi final of up to twelve competitors who will repeat either B. 1 or B. 2 at the discretion of the adjudicator.

E. Semi-finalists shall be determined by marks gained in the preliminary round.

F. Six Final Award Concert competitors will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final.

G. Costumes and choreography should be appropriate to the age of both the competitors ansd suitable for a family audience.

N.B. Nomination of competitors by Societies should be based on classes B1 and B2 i.e. without the Master Class, but may include an impromptu class, at the discretion of the society.

N.B. AT THE NATIONAL COMPETITION
Nominees in the Modern Dance section are required to include performance copies of their music on CD when submitting their entry form, and a list of the titles and composer of the pieces.

SOCIETY NOMINATION

Each Society which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors who shall be
selected by the adjudicator based on a performance as outlined in A, B1 and B2.

The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to
competently represent that society at the National Finals.

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include:

           -. A demonstration of adequate preparation

           -. An authority of performance

           -. A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO
nomination will be made.

The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards i.e.
$57.50 (incl. GST).

PACANZ CRITERIA FOR BALLET & TAP

 
~ 2008 ~


CRITERIA FOR BALLET AWARD

A. Performers shall be 15 and under 19 years as at 1 October 2008

B. Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary round:

      1. Solo Variation from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty or Nutcracker

      2. Solo Variation from any recognised classical repertoire. The selection must show a clear contrast in style to the variation       selected in section B.1

      3. All performers will participate in a Technical Class conducted by or for the Adjudicator. No audience observation will be       permitted. The Technical Class will be taken into consideration in determining both the semi-final and the final placing.

C. There  will be a semi-final of up to twelve performers who will repeat either B.1 r B.2 at the discretion of the adjudicator.

D. For the Final Award Concert six performers will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final.

E. Placing will be determined by an aggregate of all marks gained throughout the competition.


CRITERIA FOR TAP AWARD


A. Performers shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1 October 2008.

B. Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary rounds in the following order:
 
            1. Solo tap, including three different speeds in any sequence, i.e. slow (soft shoe), medium (rhythm)
            and fast (buck).

            2. Tap Dance, own selection (Not Song & Dance). The item must show a clear contrast in style       
            when compared to B.1.

            3. All performers will participate in a Master Class, taken in the manner of an Audition, conducted
            by or for the Adjudicator. No audience observation will be permitted. The Master Class will be taken into consideration in             determining both the semi-final and the final placing.

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music.
A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds.

D. In the event of a semi-final a maximum of 12 performers shall be recalled. They will perform either B.1 or B.2, at the discretion of the adjudicator.

E. For the Final Award Concert six performers will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final.

F. Placing will be determined by an aggregate of all marks gained throughout the competition.

PACANZ YOUNG PERFORMER OF THE YEAR

 
~ 2007 ~


CRITERIA FOR MODERN DANCE AWARD

A. Performers shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1 October 2007

B. Each competitor shall perform in three classes during the preliminary round;

      1.Modern/Jazz (Can include urban dance styles)

      2. Contemporary

      3. Master Class,  as  would be used for  an  audition.  No  audience  observation will be permitted.

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music.         A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more.

D. There will be a semi final of up to twelve competitors who will repeat either B.1 or B.2 at the discretion of the adjudicator.

E. For the Final Award Concert six competitors will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi final.

N.B.     Selection of Nominees by Societies should be based on classes B1 and B2 i.e. without the Master Class, but may include an impromptu class, at the discretion of the society.

Each Society, which is a financial member of Pacanz, may nominate up to two competitors, both of whom shall have achieved an average of 85% in the nominated qualifying classes held by the member society.

The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer of the Year Award.

PACANZ CRITERIA FOR TAP

CRITERIA FOR TAP AWARD

A. Performers shall be 14 and under 20 years as at 1 October 2006.

B. Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary rounds in the following order:

      1. Solo tap, including three different speeds in any sequence, i.e. slow (soft shoe), medium (rhythm) and fast (buck).

      2. Own selection, e.g. Latin, slow, waltz, speed but not song and dance. (The item must show contrast in style when compared to       B.1)

      3. All performers will participate in a Master Class, taken in the manner of an Audition, conducted by or for the Adjudicator.       Audience observation will be permitted at the discretion of the Adjudicator. The Master Class will be taken into consideration in       determining both the semi-final and the final placing.

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds.

D. In the event of a semi-final a maximum of 12 performers shall be recalled. They will perform either B.1 of B.2, at the discretion of the adjudicator.

E. For the Final Award Concert six performers will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final.

F. Placing will be determined by an aggregate of all marks gained throughout the competition.
