Taranaki Herald 10 October 1895 Tataraimaka A marriage was celebrated recently in New Plymouth, one of the contracting parties to which, though not now a resident of this district, is closely connected with it. Mr James DUGGAN, eldest son of Mr W. DUGGAN, of this district, was united to Hannah, the youngest daughter of Mr Emanuel De CASTRO, of Oakura. After the ceremony was performed the young couple drove to their new home on the Warea East Road. An accident occurred here the other day which might have been attended with very serious results. Mr J. MONTEFIORE was driving home from the bush with a load of posts to be used in the construction of his stockyard; he had a very heavy load on, and when coming down the Petone Hill near the school, the horse, being unable to keep the load back, was forced on to the side of the road, when horse, load and all rolled over an embankment, through Mr BILLING's fence, into the stream below, fortunately without any serious damage being done to either. Mr MONTEFIORE, who was riding on the load at the time, with commendable presence of mind, when he saw what was going to happen, jumped off, thus escaping what might have been a very painful accident. It is generally considered if there had been an accurate measurement taken of that jump at the time, it would have established a record for the North Island. It is said to have fairly eclipsed any of Mr MONTEFIORE's previous performances. However, all's well that ends well, and he is to be congratulated on his very narrow escape.
