Annual meeting of parishioners
Evening Post Thursday 27 Jul 1882 The annual meeting of the parishioners of St John's, Upper Hutt, was held in the Sunday schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The chairman, (the Rev. J. Blackburne), in the course of a short address, referred to the satisfactory financial position of the parish. The balance sheet showed that the total receipts for the year amounted to 48 pounds 9s 6d, and the expenditure (which includes a sum of 7 pounds 6s paid to the general church (fund) to the same amount. It appeared that the parish is entirely free of debt, and the church and Sunday school buildings are both in a good state of repair. The accounts, as read, were passed. The Curate informed the meeting that he had nominated Mr A. Cruickshank as his churchwarden. Mr Unsworth was unanimously elected as parishioner's churchwarden. The following gentlemen were elected as vestrymen:- Messrs John Barton, S. Hall, J. D. Cruickshank, E. Foden and J. Dowing. Messrs Bayliss and Barber were elected as auditors. A hearty and unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Lizzie Barber, who has so cheerfully given her services as organist at the church during the past nine months. The usual vote of thanks to the chairman brought the meeting to a close.
Tenders for enlargement of the church Evening Post Thursday 18 Jan 1883 A well-attended meeting of the parishioners [sic] of St John's Church, Upper Hutt, was held in the Sunday-schoolroom last Tuesday evening, to receive and open fresh tenders for the enlargement of the church. Only two tenders were received, viz., from Mr MACDONALD, builder, Mungaroa, 98 pounds; and Mr REYNOLDS, builder, Lower Hutt, 95 pounds. It was unanimously resolved to accept the tender of Mr REYNOLDS. A start is to be made with the work almost immediately, and it will probably be completed in about two months. The vestry received tenders for the same work about a week ago, but with one exception they were so far in excess of the architect's estimate, that it was thought advisable to return them and call for fresh tenders. The new tenders, as will be seen, although slightly in excess of the architect's estimate, are very much lower than those first received.

Sale of work in aid of St John's Evening Post Friday 22 Jun 1883 A sale of work in aid of St John's Church, Upper Hutt, was held at the Odd Fellows Hall, Trentham, on Tuesday last, which, in spite of the inclemency of the weather, was most numerously attended, and quite realised the expectations of its promoters. The local brass band contributed appropriate music, and the proceedings terminated with a dance. During the intervals the Trentham Philharmonic Society contributed some excellent glees and pieces, under the leadership of Mr W. BARBER. .... The new Archbishop of Canterbury has a commanding and even striking presence. His is a countenance which, in a more worldly walk of life, is called a good stage face, only with him, instead of tragedy and passion, the expression is one of extreme mildness and benevolence. It is a singularly winning face, and reminds one strongly of Ralph Waldo EMERSON.
