To: The Hon. Minister for Immigration, Wellington
Sir, I have the honor to enclose copy of a letter from Mr W.
KIRCHNER forwarded to me relative to the sailing of the Fritz
Reuter from Hamburg with 425 German immigrants.
I am instructed by my London Directors that I may take a few
families to the Manchester Block provided that suitable terms
can be made with the Government and I have the honor of now to
inform you that I am prepared to take charge of any number of
families up to 20 provided the Government will allow me to make
my own selection and will place them on the same footing as our
other immigrants and accept... (for the purposes of the contract
with the E. & C. Aid Corptn) as though they had been selected
and emigrated by the corporation should the Government not be
willing to accept this proposal it will not be worth our while
to undertake the extra trouble and expense which the location
and settlement of foreigners ... entails.
I have the honor to remain Sir....
Arthur F. HALCOMBE
Agent E. & C. Aid Corptn...
No 17a Adelaide Road
Wiesbaden 24 April 1876
Sir,
I duly recd. your letter of the 23rd ult. and have to inform
you now that the "Fritz Reuter" with 425 immigrants was
despatched from Hamburg to Wellington a few days ago.
As the immigrants were engaged on the strength of our agreement
existing between the Agent General of New Zealand and Messrs
STONEAM? & Co. of Hamburgh, the latter gentlemen were compelled
by the authorities here to forward the emigrants at their own
risk and in terms of the said agreement. I am sorry to say that
a good many of the emigrants I advised to you were ensnared? to
proceed by the Humbolt to Brazil, when they found that there
was some hitch in the free passage to New Zealand.
There are however some 40 to 50 very sizible families and
suitable for your lands going out in the ships. I have requested
Dr UTERHART? the Surgeon of the "Fritz Reuter" to speak to these
people and make known to them the terms of your settlement.
I put him in possession of all the information you sent me and
held out the hope to him if he could secure 40 or 50 good
families for you that the Representatives of the Corporation
in the Colony would allow him the commission for Agency as
mentioned in the instructions.
Would you therefore kindly advise your agents in the Colony on
this matter, and request them to place themselves in
communication with Dr UTERHART on the arrival of the ship "Fritz
Reuter" in Wellington.
... mention still that Dr UTERHART is a thoroughly reliable
man and that every confidence may be placed in his
recommendation. This is the fourth voyage with emigrants to
New Zealand.
I am Sir... W. KIRCHNER
