Will of Francis GILBERT (West Sussex Record Office) Kindly transcribed by Barbara Butcher who is yet to link her Gilbert family of Storrington to this one. 1841 Jul 7 Date of Will 1842 May 31 Proved - Under 100 pounds In the name of God Almighty this seventh (?) day of July one thousand eight hundred and forty one I Francis Gilbert of Steyning in the county of Sussex being of sound mind do declare this to be my last will and testament I hereby give and bequeath unto my friends Joseph Trower of Pulborough and George Michell of Steyning all my property of whatsoever held? both real and personal for the purposes heresoafter? mentioned First it is my wish that they should dispose of all my household goods and collect in all my book? debts this? is? my will and meaning that after my funeral expenses are paid that all my joint? debt shall with all convenient speed be discharged? then? it is my wish that the remainder if any shall be given unto my dear wife Jane for her s??side and benefit - Francis Gilbert (seal?) signed sealed published and declared by the said Francis Gilbert the testator as and for his last will and testament in the presance of us in his presance at his request and in the presence of each other have herewith signed? our names as witnesses hereto - Charles Easton? - John howell. Charles Easton? - John Howell Effects swarn under £450 This will was proved on the 31st May 1842, before the Rev'd William Wool?? Holland, clerk, surrogate, by the oaths of Joseph Trower and George Michell virtually appointed the Executors thereof, so a day was given for exhibiting an inventory.

Mary Ann BROWN (nee GILBERT) 1844 Jul 25 Date of Will 1845 Jan 25 Date of Codicil 1845 Jun 13 Proved at London This is the last Will and Testament of me Mary Anne Brown of East Preston in the County of Sussex a widow I give and bequeath unto my cousin Mary Jane Trower all my plate and my needle work consisting of a pair of Ottamans and a ___ and all my linen and my best set of China my two watches and my wedding ring and guard my books and pictures my ___ ___ stand my China books my desk my ___ ___ [strike birds?] and ___ a pair of chest of drawers in trust for my dear son Edward Thomas Brown if he lives to attain the age of twenty one years but in case of his death under that age then ___ ___ for my four brothers [Henry?] Thomas George and John Gilbert equally between them I give to my Aunt Mary Grant the sum of ten pounds, to my brother George Gilbert the sum of ten pounds for mourning, to my brother John Gilbert the sum of fifteen pounds to find him in clothes till the round of age and to my servant Mary Billman the sum of four pounds. I give to my uncle Thomas Gilbert the sum of ten pounds and to my uncle Thomas Trower five guineas for a ring also I give and bequeath the sum of four hundred pounds Stock in the three and a half or three and a quarter per cent Bank annuities unto my said uncles Thomas Gilbert and Thomas Trower upon trust to pay the same and all dividends and proceeds thereof which shall become due or be made thereof between the time of my decease and the coming of age of my said Son and my said Son when he attains the age of twenty one years but in case my said son shall die under the age of twenty one years leaving lawful issue then I direct the same to be in trust for such issue but in case there should be no issue then upon trust to pay the said sum of four hundred pounds Stock and the dividends and proceeds thereof unto my said four brothers Henry, Thomas, George and John Gilbert equally between them. I particularly request that the Guardians appointed by my late dear husband's will for my said dear son will permit my said cousin Mary Jane Trower to have the care and superintendance of my said Son during all his vacations until he attains the age of twelve or fourteen years. All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my monies securities for monies farming stock household goods and furniture chattels effects and personal estate whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my said four brothers Henry Thomas George and John Gilbert equally between them and I make and appoint the said Thomas Gilbert and Thomas Trower Executors of this my will and hereby revoking all former or other wills and Testaments by me at any time heretofore made I declare this to be my last will and Testament In witness whereof I the said Mary Ann Brown have to this last will and testament set my hand this twenty fifth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four. Mary Anne Brown signed by the Testatrix Mary Anne Brown and acknowledged by her to be her last will and testament in the presence of us present at the same time and subscribed by us in the presence of the said Testatrix and of each other Henry Dixon, [Ferung?] Vicarage, Rich Edmunds, Worthing Solr East Preston Jany 25th 1845 Since making my will I have taken one hundred pounds from the funds leaving three hundred pounds which I have bequeathed to my dear Son I now request that my Executors will pay one hundred pounds from the Stock and [cross?] into the funds for my said Son so that he may inherit four hundred pounds as expressed in my will I also request that he may have the hall eight day clock his small Chest of Drawers and the [fourth bed?] I also request that in the event of my said son's death before he attains the age of twenty one years that my cousin Mary Ann Trower shall have my needlework Spoon and my portrait and my cousin Amelia Trower the set of China signed Mary Anne Brown, witnessed by Susannah [Baker?] ___ Jupp In the Prerogative Court of Canterbury In the Goods of Mary Anne Brown widow deceased Appeared Personally Susannah [Haker?] of East Preston in the County of Sussex spinster and made oath that she is one of subscribed witnesses to the Codicil to the last will and testament of Mary Anne Brown late of East Preston in the County of Sussex widow deceased which Codicil is now hereunto annexed and bears date the twenty fifth day of January one thousand eight hundred and fourty five And she further made oath that on the said twenty fifth day of January one thousand eight hundred and forty five the said Testatrix duly executed the said Codicil by signing her name at the foot or end thereof as now appears thereon in the presence of this appearer and of Naomi Jupp the other subscribed witness thereto both of whom were present at the same time and this appearer and the said Naomi Jupp thereupon attested and subscribed the said Codicil in the presence of the said Testatrix Susannah [Hake?] On the 12th day of June 1845 the said Susannah [Kate?] was duly sworn to the truth of this affidavit by virtue of the annexed commission before me Henry Dixon Commissioner. Proved at London with a Codicil the 13th day of June 1845 before the Judge by the oaths of Thomas Gilbert and Thomas Trower the uncles the Executors to whom admon was granted having been first sworn by commission duly to administer.

The London Gazette 14 Apr 1864 p2047 Thomas Gilbert, of Storrington, in the county of Sussex, Maltster, Dealer, and Chapman, having been adjudged bankrupt under a Petition for adjudication of Bankruptcy, filed in Her Majesty's Court of Bankruptcy, in London, on the 8th day of April, 1863, is hereby required to surrender himself to William Frederick Higgins, Esq., a Registrar of the said Court, at the first meeting of creditors to be held before tbe said Registrar, on the 28th day of April instant, at twelve o'clock at noon precisely, at the said Court. Mr. Herbert Harris Cannan, of No. 36, Basinghall-street, London is the Official Assignee, and Messrs Mason, Sturt, and Mason, of No. 7. Gresham-street, are the Solicitors acting jn the bankruptcy.
