Earthquake New Plymouth 1 Jan 1853


"A severe shock of an Earthquake took place at N.P. about half
past eight this evening. Several chimney's were thrown down, ours
among the number in Courtney Street was deemed advisable to be
taken down. No lives were lost." (1)

"On 1st January 1854 (error?), at half-past 8pm a severe shock
of earthquake was felt in New Plymouth. The afternoon had been 
hazy, and a remarkable round cloud, which sent out a long 
tail-like streamer, hovered near to the peak of the mountain."
