Gentleman's Magazine 1840 p102 Obituary - Clergy deceased April 9 - At Stoke Goldington, Bucks, aged 85, the Rev. William Drake, M.A., Vicar of Oadby, Leicestershire, to which church he was presented in 1794 by George Wrighte, esq.
The Times Mon 14 Sep 1840 p3 Portsmouth (From the Hampshire Telegraph of Saturday) The Donegal, 78, has been expected for some days at Spithead, as she left Lisbon on the 25th ult.; it is possible, however, that some discretionary orders may have induced Sir John to proceed at once to the Mediterranean, to which station, it is understood, he is appointed as second in command; and we have also heard a report, that subsequent to his leaving the Tagus he had heard of the disturbance in Lisbon, and had thought it best to put back again; however that may be, orders are waiting at this port for the Donegal's officers and men to turn over, immediately on their arrival, to the Britannia, 120 guns, when Sir Edward Codrington's staff and followers are to be transferred to the Queen, of 11 guns.
The Times Mon 21 Sep 1840 p6 Portsmouth (From the Hampshire Telegraph of Saturday) The Donegal, 78, Captain Drake, with Rear-Admiral Sir John A. Ommanney's flag on board, arrived on Tuesday. She had looked into Plymouth the previous day. Yesterday she was towed into harbour by the Echo, Government steamer, assisted by the Monarch steamer, hired from Southampton; which latter vessel then proceeded to Havre with her passengers. The Donegal's ship's company is to be turned over to the Britannia, 120 guns, and to have a portion of their wages paid to them at once, and the balance on her leaving England for the Mediterranean. Sir John Ommanney went to London immediately on his arrival, and returned today to expedite the fitment of the Britannia, in which he will hoist his flag as second in command in the Mediterranean. It was intimated to the crew of the Donegal yesterday by Captain Drake the intentions of the Admiralty regarding them, and the intimation was received with that honest feeling of English sailors, which is never better evinced than when they know their services are wanted, and they feel a pride in rendering such service. Every man, from the admiral to the cook's boy, is transferred to the Britannia, and the whole have a fortnight's leave of absence. Sir E. Codrington's followers and staff commission the Queen, but will be hulked in the Donegal till the Queen is ready to take the naval station of the flag ship. Appointments From the Donegal to Britannia __ Captain John Drake; Commander George W. Lydiard; Lieutenants Peter Duthy, J. M. Langtry, Frederick Cannon, George Bott, Edward Little, James A. Pell, accompanied by the Salamander steam-frigate, Commander Henry, arrived here yesterday from Sheerness, for the purpose of completing her crew and stores previous to her sailing to the Mediterranean. The Britannia, 120, Captain Drake, with the flag of Rear-Admiral Sir John A. Ommanney, K.C.B., will be towed out of harbour by the Salamander on Monday, and shortly proceed with the Howe to the Mediterranean. The Salamander is also destined for the same quarter. Greetham, officiating Judge Advocate in the absence of Mr Hoskins, for the trial of Mr T. Barry, boatswain, doing duty in the Laurel, for being in bed drunk with his wife, and incapable of moving, between the hours of 10 and 11, with a light burning in his cabin, near a curtain, on the night of the 1st instant. The charges were proved, but in consideration of the high character formerly borne, and the testimonials produced, the court sentenced him to be dismissed from his office of boatswain in the Royal Navy, and adjudged him to serve three years as a petty officer.
The Times Fri 16 Oct 1840 p4 Portsmouth - The Britannia, 120, Captain Drake, bearing the flag (red at the mizen) of Rear-Admiral Sir John Ommanney, K.C.B., went out of the harbour to Spithead on Monday, where she will embark her lower deck guns, and complete her stores, for which every despatch is being used.
The Times Mon 2 Nov 1840 p6 Portsmouth (From the Hampshire Telegraph of Saturday) The Britannia, 120, Captain Drake, with the flag of Rear-Admiral Sir John Ommanney, K.C.B., and the Howe, 120, Captain Sir W. O. Pell, unmoored this evening; and will proceed to the Mediterranean tomorrow morning. The Hecate steam-frigate, for the same quarter, is only detained for the survey of the surgeon's stores, in consequence of that officer having been dismissed the ship, and for his successor joining, but she will go to sea tomorrow. These large ships were paid wages on Thursday, and inspected yesterday by Admiral Sir E. Codrington, who expressed himself highly gratified with their appearance, both as respects crews and ships. Each ship will go to sea with nearly 1,100 men on board, as they carry out upwards of 350 disposable men for the fleet, of the very best description. They, as well as the Salamander, are filled with ordnance and commissariat stores. Admiral Ommanney takes his two daughters and the Hon. Mrs Byng to Malta. Commander Ommanny takes passage in the Britannia, as an amateur at the seat of war. The following Royal Marine Officers proceed in the Britannia and Howe to the Mediterranean to do duty, their services being essentially required, when the Marines are landed or brigaded:- Lieutenant-Colonels McCullum and Gordon, Captains Baker, Edwards, H. Mitchell, Waters, Law, Miller, McKinnon, and E. A. Parker. A court-martial was held on Friday and Saturday, on board Her Majesty's ship Victory, for the trial of Mr A. Smith, surgeon of Her Majesty's steamer Hecate, for drunkenness and improper conduct on the 23d and 24th October. The charge was proved; but in consideration that he had never before been guilty of the like, and also in consequence of the high character he had previously sustained, the Court adjudged him to be severely reprimanded, to be dismissed from the Hecate, and to be placed at the bottom of the list of surgeons. Rear-Admiral Sir J. A. Ommanney was President of the Court, and the other members were - Captains Sir W. O. Pell, Loch, Montagu, Sir T. Hastings, and Drake; James Hoskins, Esq., Judge-Advocate. Appointments Volunteer, 1st Class - Adolphus B. Oldfield, from Britannia to Howe
The Times Fri 1 Jan 1841 p5 Private Correspondence Malta, Dec 17 The Britannia, 120, Captain Drake, with the flag of Rear-Admiral Sir F. A. Ommanney, and the Howe, 120, Captain Sir W. O. Pell, arrived off the great harbour last night from England. Owing to a strong head wind they did not enter the harbour till this morning.
The Times Wed 20 Jan 1841 p5 Naval Intelligence (From the Malta Times of the 5th instant) The Britannia, 120 (bearing the flag of Rear-Admiral Sir J. A. Ommanney, K.C.B.), Captain Drake, and the Howe, 120, Captain Sir W. O. Pell, proceeded this morning for Marmorice Bay, where Admiral Ommanney will relieve Admiral Sir Robert Stopford.
The Times Fri 19 Feb 1841 p6 Naval Intelligence (From the Maltic Times) Malta, Feb 5 The Stromboli had re-arrived at Marmorice, just as the Marianne was about to leave, and left the Britannia with the flag of Sir F. Ommanney, who was to replace Sir R. Stopford in the command of the Mediterranean, and who was expected to leave immediately for Malta. Bay of Marmorice, Jan 26 In my last I mentioned that the departure of so many of our large ships had left the bay comparatively dull, but the remark would scarcely apply now, for on Sunday the 24th, the greater part of the Ottoman fleet arrived from Alexandria, and entering the harbour with a fresh and fair breeze, took up their berths beside the Austrian squadron and our own, in very superior style, considering their long detention by Mehemet Ali. Their appearance in coming in was most imposing, a huge three-decker of 140 guns, the Mahmondie, leading the van, with an admiral's flag at the main, whose name I have not been able to learn. She was followed by another three-decker, also bearing an admiral's flag, five two-deckers, nine frigates, and four smaller vessels, in all 20 sail, but another three-decker and several other ships are hourly expected to heave in sight. The Tahiri Bahri, Ottoman steamer, arrived here yesterday, and passed Admiral Walker Pasha, with his flag in a double-banked frigate two days since, so he is looked for in the course of to-morrow; and soon after his arrival, Admiral Sir R. Stopford will sail for Malta in the Cyclops, taking the Princess Charlotte and Thunderer with him. Rear-Admiral Sir J. Ommanney will then assume command of the division of the fleet left behind in this bay, consisting of his flag ship the Britannia, 120, Captain John Drake; the Powerful, 84, Commodore Sir C. Napier, Captain Mansel; the Howe, 120, Captain Sir W. O. Pell; the Vanguard, 80, Captain Sir D. Dunn; the Rodney, 92, Captain Maunsell; the Calcutta, 84, Captain Sir S. Roberts; the Revenge, 76, Captain the Hon. W. Waldegrave; the Cambridge, 78, Captain Barnard; the Castor, 36, Captain C. Patey (acting); the Daphne, 18, Captain Dalling; and Wasp, 16, Commander Glanville. The Cylops steam frigate, Captain H. Austin, C. B., arrived in port on the 2d inst., bearing the flag of the naval Commander in Chief, Admiral the Hon. Sir R. Stopford, G. C. B., &c. She left Marmorice on the 28th ult., and the Princess Charlotte sailed on the same day for Malta. On her passage hither the Cyclops rode out a strong westerly gale during 34 hours in the Bay of Servia. The Thunderer left Marmorice for Malta on the 27th. There was lying in that bay on the 28th the Britannia, with the flag of Rear-Admiral Sir J. A. Ommanney, K.C.B.; the Howe, Powerful, Calcutta, Revenge, Vanguard, Cambridge, of the line; Castor frigate, and Wasp sloop. The ships were very healthy. The Daphne had gone to Smyrna.

The Times 14 Sep 1847 Death Notice On the 5th inst at Teignmouth, aged 27, Elizabeth Ann, only surviving daughter of Capt John DRAKE, R.N.
British Naval Biographical Dictionary 1849 DRAKE (Captain, 1835. F-P., 26; H-P., 17.) John Drake, born 21 Dec. 1788, is son of the Rev. Wm. Drake, vicar of Oadby, co. Leicester, and curate of Stoke Goldington, co. Bucks. This officer entered the Navy, 13 July, 1804, as Fst.-cl. Vol., on board the DEFIANCE 74, Capts. Philip Chas. Durham and Hon. Henry Hotham, in which ship he continued to serve, as Midshipman and Master's Mate, until Aug. 1810. He took part, during that period, in Sir Robt. Calder's action, and in the battle of Trafalgar, 22 July and 21 Oct. 1805; was also present at Sir Robt. Stopford's destruction, with a loss to the DEFIANCE of 2 men killed and 25 wounded, of three French frigates under the batteries of Sable d'Olonne, 24 Feb. 1809; and, on the night of 31 Dec. following, commanded one of four boats at the cutting out of a timber-ship of 400 tons, secured to the wall of a fortress at Belle-isle. After much co-operation, likewise, with the patriots on the north coast of Spain, Mr Drake accompanied Capt. Hotham, in Aug. 1810, into the NORTHUMBERLAND 74; as a Lieutenant of which ship (commission dated 1 Aug. 1811) he subsequently assisted, in company with the GROWLER gun-brig, at the gallant destruction, 22 May, 1812, at the entrance of L'Orient, of the French 40-gun frigates L'Arienne and L'Andromaque, and 16-gun brig Mamelouck; whose united fire, conjointly with that of a destructive battery, killed 5 of the NORTHUMBERLAND'S people, and wounded 28. Mr Drake, whose next appointment was, 2 Feb. 1813, to the INDUS 74, Capt. Wm. Hall Gage, returned home from the Mediterranean in Sept. 1814. He afterwards joined, as First-Lieutenant - in Jan. 1820, and Feb. 1822, the WYE 26, and RANGER 28, both commanded by Capt. Peter Fisher, on the Home, Newfoundland, and Mediterranean Stations - and, 8 Dec. 1825, the ALBION 74, Capt. John Acworth Ommanney. Being rewarded for his services in the latter ship at the battle of Navarin, by a Commander's commission dated 22 Oct. 1827, Capt. Drake, who continued in the ALBION until Feb. 1828, was subsequently appointed to the Second-Captaincy, 18 Sept. 1829, of the GANGES 84, Capts. John Hayes, Edw. Stirling Dickson, and Geo. Burdett, and, 26 March, 1832, of the BRITANNIA 120, Capt. Peter Rainier, flag-ship for some time of Sir Pulteney Malcolm, both on the Mediterranean station. He ultimately assumed Post-rank, 21 March, 1835; and was next employed as Captain, from 2 Sept. 1837, to May, 1840, of the DONEGAL 78, and BRITANNIA 120, successive flag-ships, off Lisbon and in the Mediterranean, of his former Commander, Sir J. A. Ommanney. Since the last-mentioned date he has not been afloat. Capt. Drake is a Magistrate for Cambridge. He married, in 1815, Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. Robt. Style, rector of Mereworth, and vicar of Waterinbury, co. Kent, granddaughter of Sir Thos. Style, Bart., of Waterinbury Place, and niece of Lieut.-General Wm. Style. He has issue a son and daughter. The deceased had in his pocket, when found, a watch, money to the amount of 9l. 0s. 6d., a post-office order, and various other papers. He was unmarried.
