Rev. Charles Daniel DE CASTRO, who for about 16 years was the Acting Chaplain of the
Wellington Gaol, was born at Knightsbridge, near London, in 1832. Educated
at private schools in England and France, and subsequently at the Royal
Agricultural College, Cirencester, Mr De Castro came to New Zealand in 1853
per ship "Cornwall", landing in Wellington. After teaching a school for a
short time, he settled in Porirua, where he engaged in farming pursuits,
meeting with the usual experience of many of the early settlers, who went
forth to subdue the land and fearlessly braved the hardships and dangers which
fell to their lot. Entering the Civil Service in 1868, he was an officer of
the Government till February, 1892, when he retired on pension. Mr de Castro
occupied a responsible position in the Treasury, having charge of the Trust
and Loan Accounts till 1872. Parliament having constituted the Public Trust
Office in that year the subject of this notice was transferred to the new
department, in which he became Chief Clerk. He held this important office
for many years and took a prominent part in the rapid development of this
splendid New Zealand Institution, which has proved of such general utility.
In 1875 he took holy orders under Bishop Hadfield, and since this time he
has ever lent his assistance to the church of his choice without fee or
reward. The reverend gentleman has been married three times: in 1853, to the
youngest daughter of the late Mr E. D. Salisbury, of Middleton, Lancashire,
who died the following year; in 1855, to the third daughter of the late
Doctor Knox, of Wellington. This lady died in September 1889 leaving eight
sons and six daughters. Three of Mr De Castro's sons are in the Government
Service, two respectively in the Education and Government Insurance Departments
and the third as Deputy Commissioner of Stamps and Deputy Registrar of the
Supreme Court in Nelson. His eldest daughter is Mrs T. S. Morpeth, of Auckland.
The other daughters, with one exception are married and settled. The present
Mrs De Castro is a daughter of the late Mr Edward Bull, of Dublin, proprietor
and publisher of "The Warder" newspaper.

George Percival DE CASTRO
A wave of gloom passed over the entire community yesterday afternoon, when it
became known that one of our oldest and most esteemed residents in the person
of George Percival de Castro, had passed to that beyond from whence no traveller
returns. In failing health for many months, the late Mr de Castro had borne his
serious and protracted illness with fortitude and courage, but it had become
evident of recent weeks that the battle was an unequal one, the end coming
peacefully yesterday afternoon.
The late Mr de Castro was the sixth son of the late Rev. Charles N. de Castro,
and grandson of the late Dr Knox, one of the earliest residents in Wellington,
where Mr de Castro was born in 1868. Serving his apprenticeship as an apothecary
in Wellington, he subsequently proceeded to Dunedin, where he took his diploma
with honours. Thereafter he proceeded to New South Wales, remaining in Sydney
for a period of five years. Returning to New Zealand, he was for a short time
in Greymouth, and in 1895 came to Paeroa, where he purchased the business of
Mr J. W. Hall, for some years also conducting an establishment in Waihi.
The late Mr de Castro was thus one of the oldest residents of Paeroa, and
throughout that long period always took a keen and active interest in all
movements calculated to promote the welfare of the town and district. In public
life he served for one term as a member of the Paeroa Borough Council, 1925-1927,
and was noted for the able manner in which he fulfilled that office, being
constructive in his ideas, and not hesitating to trenchantly criticise those
actions which he did not regard as being in the best interests of the ratepayers.
In civilian life, he was one of the foundation members of the Paeroa Bowling
Club, being president of the 1910 and 1911 term, while he was a committeeman
and selector for many years. In the early days of Paeroa he was an enthusiastic
cricketer, being no mean weilder of the willow. He was also an active member of
the Paeroa Golf Club, as also of the Ohinemuri Club. In his day he rendered
yeoman service to the Church of England, being for a number of years secretary
to St. Paul's Vestry. Of the Masonic fraternity, he was at one time a member
of the Lodge Ohinemuri.
The late Mr de Castro, soon after establishing business in Paeroa, married Miss
Hyde, of Nelson, and is survived by his wife, one son (Dr L. R. de Castro, of
Te Kuiti), and three daughters, Mrs R. J. Hunter, of Auckland, and Misses
Raye and June de Castro. The interment will be a private one.

Mr John Willis de Castro, whose death occurred on Saturday, was born at
Wellington 81 years ago. He had resided in Masterton for the past 58 years.
He was employed by Messrs Levin and Co. for over 40 years, during most of
that time as a country representative. He retired in 1938 but during the war
years he returned to assist the firm owing to its shortage of staff. He was
a member of the Masterton Bowling Club, of St Matthew's Church vestry and of
the Church of England Men's Society. He is survived by his wife and two sons,
Mr D. de Castro (Christchurch) and Mr H. W. de Castro (Tauranga). The funeral
will take place tomorrow. A service will be held at St Matthew's Church,
Masterton, at 11am, followed by cremation at Karori at 2pm.

for 40 years, retiring at the age of 56.

Captain of 1920 HB Team dies
A man who captained the New Zealand Armed Forces rugby team in Britain
during the First World War, and who became captain of the Hawke's Bay
rugby team in 1920, Mr Charles Baron Knox de Castro, Haumoana, died at
Napier on Saturday.
Mr de Castro, who was 79, was a well-known figure around Haumoana. He was
born in Wellington and was educated at Clifton Terrace School and Wellington
College. During the First World War he fought at Gallipoli. By the end of
the war he had attained the rank of captain.
Mr de Castro married Dorothy May Holland at Suva in 1921 and lived in
Australia for some years where he was an auctioneer for a stock and station
firm. He had experience as a stock and station agent in Hawke's Bay where
firms he worked for included Murray Roberts and New Zealand Loand and
Mercantile Ltd.
Mr de Castro came back from Australia to work for the Vacuum Oil Company in
Hastings. He was then transferred to Blenheim. At the outbreak of the Second
World War he entered Burnham Military Camp.
Gymkhanas
At the end of the war he returned to Hawke's Bay. He lived in Haumoana for
more than 20 years. When Haumoana residents were raising funds for the
Memorial Hall, Mr de Castro helped out by running gymkhanas. During the
depression years he helped keep morale up by organising community singing
in Hastings. Beside rugby, Mr de Castro's sporting interests included bowls,
cricket and golf.
He was a member of the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Hastings, and
belonged to the Church's mens' club. When he shifted to Haumoana, he joined
the Presbyterian Church there.
His wife died before him. He leaves a son, Robert (Napier) and a daughter,
Mrs Helen Williams (Haumoana). He had three grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
