The Times 13 May 1911 p13 Obituary
The death occurred from double pneumonia yesterday, at this residence,
47, Upper Grosvernor-street, W., of Mr Emerson M. Bainbridge, formerly
M.P. for the Gainsborough Division of Lincolnshire. He only returned
from the south of France last week, where he had been suffering from a
severe attack of influenza.
Mr Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge, who was 65 years of age, was a son of
the late Mr Emerson Bainbridge, of Eshott Hall, Northumberland. He was
educated privately and, concurrently with his period of apprenticeship
in Lord Londonderry's collieries, at the University of Durham, where he
studied mathematics and mining engineering. He soon established a
reputation among those connected with the mining industry. In 1867 he
was selected to report to the North of England Institute of Mining
Engineers on the haulage of coal, and his efforts were rewarded by the
committee by the conferment of a valuable premium. Two years afterwards
the Institution of Civil Engineers awarded him the Manby premium for a
paper upon the probability of working coal at a depth of 4,000ft.
Another paper on the prevention of colliery explosions was rewarded by
the conferment of one of the Herman prizes.
In 1870 the Sheffield and Tinsley Collieries were placed under the
supervision of Mr Bainbridge and he later accepted the management of
the Duke of Norfolk's Collieries. Afterwards he became managing director
of the Nunnery Colliery Company and, with other gentlemen, opened up a
considerable number of new coalfields in the Midlands. How wide were the
interests of Mr Bainbridge is shown from the long list of companies of
which he was a director, including the Blackwell Colliery Company
(Limited), the Bolsover Colliery Company (Limited), the Griff Colliery
Company (Limited), the Hatfield Main Colliery Company (Limited), the
Mansfield Railway Company, the New Hucknall Colliery Company (Limited),
the Newbiggin Colliery Company (Limited), the Nunnery Colliery Company
(Limited), the Sheffield District Railway Company, the Wharncliffe Silkstone
Collieries (Limited), and the Yorkshire Engine Company.
Mr Bainbridge's wide knowledge of engineering made him a valuable member
of the Royal Commission on Coal Dust in Mines in 1891, and at the
Inventions Exhibition of 1883 he was one of the jurors.
In 1895 Mr Bainbridge was nominated as Liberal candidate for the Gainsborough
Division at Lincolnshire, and was elected by a majority of 776 votes. He
sought re-election in 1900, but was defeated by the Hon. S. Ormsby-Gore by
37 votes. Mr Bainbridge made many gifts to charitable objects, and built
a holiday home for factory girls at Seaford and a Miners' Orphanage at
Bolsover, Chesterfield. He was twice married, first to Eliza, daughter of
Mr G. J. Armstrong, of Manchester, and, secondly, to Norah Mossom, daughter
of Mr J. Compton Merryweather, of Whitehall Court, S.W., who survives him.

Mr Thomas Hudson Bainbridge, head of the firm of Bainbridge and Co.
(Limited), clothiers, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, died yesterday at

Mr Bainbridge was one of the most widely-known Wesleyans in the

he took an active part in the formation of the West London Mission.
Northern Wesleyan and philanthropic objects also benefited considerably
by his generosity. For some years Mr. Bainbridge had lived at Eshott,
Northumberland. There, in 1888, he established his herd of Aberdeen
Angus cattle, having made purchases from the Ballindalloch herd of
the late Sir George Macpherson-Grant. Mr Bainbridge was a very
successful breeder, and his exhibits took many prizes in the polled
cattle classes at the Royal and other agricultural shows. He was
chairman of Bainbridge Brothers (Limited), of Leeds, vice-chairman
of the Consett Iron Company, and director of the Cairn Line of

The Bainbridge Church Story by J. D. Dawson - check
Edwin's father was a prominent Newcastle-on-Tyne Methodist but he died
when Edwin was seven. Shortly afterwards the boy's mother died also
and he and his brothers and sisters were brought up by their
grandmother...
Edwin was sent on an overseas trip partly for his health, which had
never been robust, and partly to help him recover from these tragic
bereavements.
And Not to Yield by Thora Parker p124 - In New Zealand
Edwin Bainbridge, always described as 'the young English tourist' had
been staying at my mother's home prior to going to Rotorua to see the
Pink and White Terraces. Edwin was 20 years of age and had come to New
Zealand to visit his Aunt Selina Drake [nee Walters] who had come out
on the Aurora, and his cousins, my mother Mercy Jenkins [nee Drake]
being one of them. His health was not good, and it was hoped the trip
would be beneficial.
p125
Edwin appears to have had a premonition that he would not survive, and
was distressed for his family's sake. They had recently suffered the
loss of his two sisters, who had died of consumption.
p126
Edwin's death came as a terrible shock to all the New Zealand
relatives. The reaction of his family in Newcastle-on-Tyne when they
heard of his tragic death, was to send funds sufficient for the
establishment of a Methodist church in Rotorua, the nearest town to
where the tragedy occurred. The church was called the Bainbridge
Memorial Church.
Letters written to the New Zealand Government 10th June 1886 by Dawn CHAMBERS
In: GRINZ Yearbook 2002 [Genealogical Research Institute of New Zealand]
In 1940, a sister of Edwin Bainbridge, who was living at Poignton in
Devonshire, wrote to J. E. SMITH to find out where her brother's money
went. Smith then requested answers from the Minister of Internal
Affairs, W. E. PARRY.
