Louis Dihars
Louis DiHars was born in 1820 in Libourne in France, about 100km from the city of Bordeaux. Louis had joined the French Foreign Legion, along with his brother. But after his brother was killed in the Legion, his father bought Louis out - he didn't want his only living son to be killed as well.
So with financial assistance from his father, Louis set forth on a whaling ship from Barcelona to the French settlement at Akaroa. Click here for more background.
He married Erena (Ellen) Pareraukawa in Tauranga in 1845 at the age of 25. They had eight children.
Louis died in Waihi on 19-January-1907 at the age of 87, with the cause cited as "senile decay - not certified". The death certificate (where Ripeka Samson was the 'informant') said the name and profession of his parents were not known. It said that at the time of his death his children were "one male (46 years) and five female (47, 43, 41, 40 and 35 years)".
So Louis survived Erena by seven years.
