  • Astronomy Picture of the Day Archive

    This is a great place which, since 1995, has presented a new astronomy based picture every day complete with an explanation of what it is from somebody who knows what they're talking about. The explanations are written in plain english so that most people can understand it. All the back archives are kept available, making this an extraordinary large picture/caption database.

  • The Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand

    This is the premier astronomical society of New Zealand. It binds together many smaller affiliated societies and is divided in to subsections for different interest groups within astronomy. The site itself is regularly updated, particularly with accurate information on upcoming events to do with an astronomical nature.

    • Aurora and Solar section

      The Aurora and Solar section of the RASNZ mostly consists of people living in southern parts of New Zealand where aurorae are commonly seen. This page contains some photographs, as well as some general information about the Aurora and Solar section.

    • Occultation section

      If you ever wanted a proper idea of what an occultation is, get it from the people who know. This page is full of such information, aimed at beginners just as much as everyone.

  • Auckland Astronomical Society

    Here you'll find a gold mine of news and information both about the Auckland Society, and about astronomy in general. The Auckland Society has it's own junior section (Night Eyes) whose site can also be found here.

  • Wellington Astronomical Society

    The Wellington Astronomical Society meets monthly with regular talks on just about anything to do with astronomy. The site provides some information, as well as up-to-date announcements regarding what's going on at the society.

  • Phoenix Astronomical Society

    The Phoenix Astronomical Society, based in Wellington and the lower North Island, hold regular meetings in Wellington, the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay.

  • Canterbury Astronomical Society

    CAS consists of about 160 people and meets monthly. The site contains assorted information, particularly about comets, in addition to various links.

  • Gisborne Astronomical Society

    The Gisborne Astronomical Society is based at Cook Observatory. This site has details about the observatory, and details about the society's activities.

  • Auckland Stardome

    Located in Auckland, the Auckland Stardome Observatory and Planetarium provides an entertaining site with a substantial amount of useful, regularly updated astronomical news and information.

  • Carter Observatory

    The Carter Observatory in Wellington is New Zealand's base for professional astronomy. Since 1977 it has been recognised as the National Astronomical Observatory of New Zealand. In 1997 11.5 employees were paid to research, manage the heritage of, open the public's eyes to, and educate the topic of astronomy - thereby substantially increasing the quality of life for all within New Zealand. (Except for the half of that one person who didn't get rounded off - that may have frightened some visitors.) This site contains general information about the Carter Observatory, as well as some handy reference information all about astronomical topics.

  • Precision Telescope and Optics

    This is a good place to start if you're thinking of buying a commercial telescope. Located in Tauranga, Precision Telescope and Optics is a New Zealand dealer for Meade parts and accessories. It's also a good source of information for hints and tips on selecting and buying a telescope in general.
