He was for some years editor of the "Newburyport Herald," and was several times elected a Representative to the General Court.         697. MARY
6, bapt. April 9, 1769, in Rowley, and died unm., April 26, 1859, aged over 90 years. She was gifted with a remarkable memory, a characteristic of her family, and from her youth was a great reader, and could repeat from memory, most of the Bible, the works of Milton, Young, and others. She was of a peaceable and retiring disposition, and lived a christian life, beloved by young and old. She was of the medium height and had brown hair and blue eyes. In 1840, at the request of the writer, she furnished an outline of a genealogy of her ancestors (from Amos, who died in 1678, son of the first settler in N. E.), with the personal appearance and character of many of the family. She writes:- "My brother Thomas [698] informed me that you desired some account of our ancestors, and the several branches of the families descending from them. I found it to be an arduous task to call to memory so many generations, with all their descendants, almost to the present time. I believe you may depend on the correctness of what I have written (forty-five pages). Many of these persons I was intimately acquainted with, the rest I had from persons of undoubted integrity. You need not be ashamed of your ancestors; they were as respectable as the generality of people. All the help I have had is from my brother; he has assisted in finding a few dates and names; the rest I have called to memory in waking hours of the night. Thus I have waded through many generations, and branches of families; the greater part of them are dead, dropped off, like the leaves of autumn; thus one and another generation passeth away. 'Our Fathers, where are they! and the Prophets do not live forever.' "
