Bulletin Date: 09/09/09 INotices: Following Grace President Tony welcomed the members present and David Sutherland who was a guest from Wellington North Rotary Club, he also advised that our intended speaker Constable Brett Polgase had been called to duty and could not give his talk tonight, however, two of our members stepped into the breach and would be giving an insight into their recent travels through Europe. President Tony asked the members to find a suitable person from the Real Estate with a view to membership of the club. He intends to ask the club each week to look for some person from the various trades as a means to increasing membership. Sergeant: The Sergeant: Sergeant for the night was Jim Ross, Jim started with a fine for Bill Matson for shaking hands with the Pope on his recent visit to Rome where he visited the Vatican. In answer to questions Bill said that the Pope was a very nice man and had a sense of humour. While he was there a representative from the German group presented the Pope with a swimsuit having the names of the German swimming participants written on them, the Pope held this on himself and said it would fit. Raffle: The lucky persons were this week Don Procter, Rod Carter and Steve Golledge Reminders: reasurer John Bowater reminded us all, if we have not done so already, to pay our subs prior to August 30th to be in the draw. Our speaker: Bill Matson and John Edgecombe. This was an impromptu talk as they only arrived home about ten days ago. Bill Matson spoke first and gave a synopsis of where they had been, Prague, Switzerland, U.K. (10 days) New York, Las Vegas, Rome, Florence, Venice, Tuscany, and while they were in U.K., the Cotswolds. Bill had 10 weeks and John 8 weeks holidays and both members had their wife's with them. John then took over, his Holiday started in Hong Kong then on to Prague where he joined a boat to do a 14 day cruise, John said that it was like a floating hotel they had excellent food, then they went to Lucerne, Switzerland and John was very taken with their engineering skills after travelling in one of their mountain trains, unfortunately Jenny, John's wife, had her purse stolen so they had to cancel the credit cards in the purse, they left their name and address with the shop and when they got home there was a small parcel which held the purse and still had the cards in it. Following that sojourn they joined with the Matson's and had a car tour of part of Italy with Bill doing the driving. John mentioned the long tunnels again a feat of engineering, they also joined the Matson's in the Cotswolds. It was a great sight-seeing trip that you probable do only once in a lifetime but as John said "Its good to be home". Parting Thought: Rod Carter and Socrates: Hear courteously, Answer wisely, consider soberly, and decide impartially. also, Research has shown that cheerful people are more resistant to disease than miserable people. In other words, It's the surly bird that catches the germ. Statistics: Raffle $76 Sergeant: $ 37 Members Present: 25 Guests: 1 |
