Bulletin Date: 02/09/09 INotices: President Tony welcomed John Edgecombe and Bill Matson back from their overseas sojourn with their wives - John recounted their visit to the Rotary Club of 'Dursley' which is half an hour north of Bristol, in England. He showed the banner which was presented to them and indicated that the 'Dursley Rotarians had had much difficulty in pronouncing 'Waikanae' when receiving ours. Tony then asked Graham Calvert to say Grace. Graham obliged with an old Rotary Grace from a 1974 bulletin. - ( Sometimes the traditional ones mean so much more ) The draw for the subs paid on time was then carried out by John Bowater and Rod Carter was the lucky winner. Mike Gilbert indicated that he is now part of 'Waikanae !' a ginger group working to ensure the new road/ rail issues are being promoted to the benefit of our area. He asked for support for the meeting to be held next week at Southwards and which will consider the now 3 options that have been proposed by the Transport agency. He noted that we can look up the latest information on www.waikanae1.o Sergeant: Bruce Mansell's fines came from musing on the 3 awards for the Ohau Gravels wines - and the effects of the latest Expressway bombshell Raffle: The winners were Barry Herbert and Ian Standen Reminders: reasurer John Bowater reminded us all, if we have not done so already, to pay our subs prior to August 30th to be in the draw. Committee Meetings: From the Directors meeting - President Tony advised the meeting that enactments of the Charities Commission in recent years have brought some changes in the way Charities have to be registered and how donations are treated for tax purposes. Our Club has always been considered a Charity, so to preserve this status, the Club has registered a Trust with the Charities Commission. There are some interesting aspects to this, such as the duties and responsibilities of the Trustees and It is intended that there will be a presentation to the Club in the not too distant future. The Directors also advise that official Committee meetings in future will be held every two months, but for urgent matters, can be convened after a meeting if necessary Club Service: Discussion followed on our programmes, venues, Meals, Ladies Nights, speakers.etc. ( Barry asked for assistance for Brent in providing some additional speakers.) One or two suggestions were made at the time. The Sound system too needs some consideration, we 'had it' -'lost it' and 'had it' again several times over. Barry also reminded us of the District Governor's visit on Sept.30th. This is a Ladies' Night and held in the Hotel restaurant. A 'special' menu has been prepared giving us a number of interesting choices for this 3 course meal. Also, mark your calendars for the Club Christmas Function on 9th.December. A special effort is being made to make this one to remember. The last meeting for the year will be on December 16th. concentrated on 'Fellowship' We still have many more interesting functions planned - A quiz evening - Golf Tournament - maybe a Reikorangi festival and other highlights yet to be finalised. Community Service: 1. A date has been agreed for the Senior College Debate between Kapiti and Paraparaumu Colleges (Year 12 or 13) - October 21st. Cecil Hood has been working on a suitable trophy and finding some adjudicators. Peter will approach John Bowater with a budget. 2. Waikanae River Duck Race - Colin McKenzie and John Algar researching. 3. Movie Premiere fundraiser - Colin to research with Shoreline. Peter reiterated that fundraising needs to be linked with a worthy recipient. 4. Golf Tournament - Ian Standen noted that sponsorship is vital. When it was last held we would only have just 'broken even' without the $4,000 sponsorship from the Community Trust. 5. Reikorangi Fair - Tony has been away and needs to find out about the likely venue. Providing an EFTPOS facility could be a problem since there is poor cell phone coverage in the Valley and not sure about a landline. 6. Ian suggested a College production / Musical / Drama at Southwards as a possible fundraiser. 7. A Quiz Night is being organised by Barry Herbert's Committee. Meeting closed 8.15pm If further reports are received they will be forward to you by e.mail.
