ABOUT US

I was born in the north western town of Barrow-in-Furness in 1953.  Shipbuilding and Steel making were at the time the most prominent industries in the region, and most young men were expected to enter into an apprenticeship for a trade within those companies.

Throughout my schooldays I enjoyed art.  This included cartooning the teachers, which gave one great insight as to the power of the pen, it also landed one in quite a bit of trouble when others thought it was a good idea and blamed me for it!  This continued throughout an engineering apprenticeship at Vickers, which eventually opened the door to enable me to travel as a certified tradesman in the British Merchant Navy.

Settling in New Zealand in late 1970 I kept painting and drawing as a hobby.  Events started to happen in the mid 1980's and the following is a summary of some of the achievements to date:

  • Resident cartoonist for the Wairarapa News (1984-1988)
  • Welcome to Carterton Signs designed for Lions (1986)
  • Cartoonist for Wairarapa Times Age (1988)
  • Cartoonist and contributor Platform 9 (NZR Journal 1988-1990)
  • Cartoonist and Editor Bus Stop (Tranzit Group in house magazine 1992-1998)
  • Cartoonist and Editor Dispatch (Tranzit Coachlines magazine 1998-2001)
  • Contributed cartoons to the book on Gladstone sheep station (1997)
  • Cartoons drawn for fundraisers at IHC, school galas and retirement homes (1984-2001)
  • Contributed cartoons to the Hutt Polytechnic unit standards programme (1998)
  • Commissions from large companies start to flow and many private individuals
  • Work published in UK magazine, Bus and Coach Preservation Monthly (1998-1999)
  • Work published in UK tabloid North Western Evening Mail (Oct 10, 2002)
  • Commissions from large NZ companies starting to flow, and many private individuals

Work is currently published in the Kapiti Observer with regular contributions to a number of national periodicals.  These include the Bus and Coach Association of NZ, Coachnet NZ and a variety of Trucking and Contractor publications.

Whether or not a scene is historic or modern, they all have a certain appeal and that's why I enjoy painting them.  The cartooning offers another sideline and some of this work will be placed on this site in the next couple of weeks.

Feel free to contact me with your ideas, I am more than willing to help!
