The Poor in Spirit

When you only have fifty cents, it’s hard to believe that you’re rich. Most of us don’t have to rely on fifty cents alone. We have a credit or debit card, a cheque account, or some resources that we can call on. Even in these difficult economic times, using up our whole livelihood is not something that many of us confront. But there are people around us that have to make those choices, people who have lost a job, incurred huge medical expenses, or are suddenly without a spouse because of death or divorce.
For some the temptation may be that of the widow and her son in the first reading, “when we have eaten [what is left], we shall die.” While Elijah worked a miracle, the Gospel today suggests that the miracle does not come from outside, but from within the community that knows those in need and reaches out.

WELCOME

 On behalf of Fr Geoff, and our parish committees, to our families, friends and any visitors who are joining us here today. Our Mass is a celebration of Christ in our community and we hope that you will feel welcomed.
Don’t hesitate to ask someone for help, or introduce yourself if you are a visitor, unless we spot you first! And, importantly, do come again.

New parishioners - please complete one of the ‘New Parishioner Details’ cards available in the foyer and pop it in the Offertory collection basket during Mass or drop it in at the Presbytery/Parish Office.

Psalm response:

Praise the Lord my soul!

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia! Alleluia!
Happy the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
Alleluia!

Today’s Readings:

Apocalypse 7:2-4, 9-14;
John 3:1-3;
Matthew 5:1-12.

November All Souls’ Masses

and the Candle Tree

Traditionally, November is the month when we remember and pray for those who have died. Envelopes for Holy Souls’ Masses are available in the church foyer, these may be placed in the collection baskets, or put in the All Souls’ box in front of the altar, or dropped into the parish office/presbytery.
During November there is also be a bare tree placed in the sanctuary, on which you are invited to hang a paper candle with the names of your deceased family members or friends written on it. These ‘candles’ are also available in the church foyer.

An initiative from the NZ Bishops conference is that we pray at our Sunday Masses for the priests of our Diocese – for an individual priest or 2 or 3 priests on that particular day.
 This weekend we will pray for:

Fr James Dooley, sm (Emmaus Retreat Centre),

Fr Patrick Dooley, sm (Otaki),

Fr Gerard Dorgan (Westport),

Fr David Dowling (Blenheim).

Father, you have appointed your Son Jesus Christ eternal High Priest.

Guide those he has chosen to be ministers of word and sacrament, and help them to be faithful in fulfilling the ministry they have received.
