homas Stanley of Row End Farm, in the Vale of St John near Keswick, Cumberland,
England, was born about 1690. Thomas
married Esther Banks on 13 November 1718 at St Kentigern’s,
Crosthwaite. Thomas, a
yeoman, and Esther had five known children born in the Vale of
St John’s by Keswick. [N.B. Christenings for most of Thomas and
Esther’s children have not been located but several of them are
named in their father’s Will, and burial records give an indication of their
approximate dates of birth]: ·
Mark Stanley was born about 1724 in the Vale of St John’s, near Keswick, Cumberland
and was the heir of his father, inheriting Row End. Mark, a
yeoman, married Ann Faulder on 25 June 1789 at St Kentigern’s,
Crosthwaite. Mark and Ann had no children. Mark
died at Row End and was buried at the church of St John’s in the Vale near
Keswick on 20 January 1809 aged 84 years. (Mark’s Will gave us
the names of his brother Timothy’s children as some of their christenings
have not been located.) ·
Elizabeth Stanley was the second child named in her father’s Will but
nothing more is known about her at this time; ·
Timothy Stanley was born about 1726 and married Lydia Green
at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite on 13 December 1762 (more details below); ·
Thomas Stanley was born at Row End and christened 25 January 1733 at St Kentigern’s,
Crosthwaite. Thomas is the fourth child mentioned in his
father’s Will and was a witness at his brother Timothy’s wedding. Nothing
more is known about him; ·
Lettice Stanley is mentioned in her father’s Will. She died at Row End and was buried
at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite on 20 January 1752, no age given. Thomas Stanley died at Row End
in the Vale of St John’s near Keswick and was buried on 7 June 1743 at St
Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, no age given. Esther Stanley nee Banks died at Row End and was buried
on 26 September 1781 at the church of St John’s in the Vale, no age given. |

imothy Stanley was born at Row End Farm, in the Vale of St John near Keswick,
Cumberland, England about 1726, the son of Thomas Stanley and Esther
Banks. Timothy
married Lydia Green (christened 30 March 1743 at St Cuthbert’s,
Lorton, Cumberland, the daughter of William
Green and Lydia Ullock) on 13 December 1762 at St
Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite. Timothy,
a weaver, and Lydia had six known children. [N.B. However, as
with Timothy’s own christening and that of most of his
siblings, records for the christenings of many of Timothy and Lydia’s
children have also not been found. Their approximate birth dates have been
ascertained from burial records.] Timothy and Lydia
were the parents of : ·
Mark Stanley born about 1763 at Row End in the Vale of St John’s near Keswick
married Sarah Walker on 23 April 1790 at St Kentigern’s,
Crosthwaite; ·
Timothy Stanley born about 1765 at Row End in the Vale of St John’s near Keswick
married Mary Edmondson on 11 December 1794 at St Kentigern’s,
Crosthwaite; ·
Esther Stanley born about 1767 at Row End in the Vale of St John’s near Keswick
married John Edmondson on 16 December 1787 at St Kentigern’s,
Crosthwaite; ·
Thomas Stanley born about 1770 (approximate as no burial found as yet) at Row End in
the Vale of St John’s near Keswick married Mary Grave on 19 May
1796 at St Mary’s, Threlkeld; ·
John Stanley born at Row End in the Vale of St John’s near Keswick and christened
20 October 1776 at the church of St John’s in the Vale married three times (more
details below); and ·
Isaac Stanley born at Shundrow in the Vale of St John’s near Keswick and christened
27 June 1781 at the church of St John’s in the Vale. Timothy Stanley died on 26 January
1814 at Shundrow in the Vale of St John near Keswick and was buried on 28
January 1814 at the church of St John’s in the Vale, aged 87 years. Lydia Stanley nee Green died at Shundrow in the Vale of
St John near Keswick and was buried on 13 May 1788 at the church of St John’s
in the Vale, aged 46 years. |

ohn Stanley was born at Row End Farm in the Vale of St John
near Keswick, Cumberland, England and christened 20 October 1776 at the church
of St John’s in the Vale, the fifth of six known children born to Timothy
Stanley and Lydia Green. John was married three times. He married Elizabeth
Cherry of Grasmere, Westmorland (christened at St Oswald’s, Grasmere
on 14 March 1784, the daughter of Joseph Cherry and Mary
Dand) on 28 May 1808 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite. John and Elizabeth had one son:
Elizabeth Stanley nee Cherry died in Keswick and was buried on 15
October 1809 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite (no age given). John married Deborah Proddow
of Keswick (christened 5 November 1775
at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, the second child of Robert Proddow
and Esther Relph) at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite on 4 November
1811. John, a weaver, and Deborah were
the parents of:
Deborah Stanley nee Proddow died in Keswick and was buried on 3 August
1821 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, aged 46 years. John married Agnes Wilson of Orton, Cumberland on 20 December 1823 at
St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite. John and Agnes had two sons:

Stanley died
in Keswick and was buried on 13 April 1831 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite,
aged 54 years. Agnes Stanley nee Wilson died in Keswick and was buried on 16 March
1856 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, aged 77 years. |

ohn Stanley was born on 24 January 1815 in Keswick, Cumberland,
England and christened 17 May 1815 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, the second
child of John Stanley and Deborah Proddow. John married Jane Grisdale of Keswick
(christened on 17 June 1815 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, the eldest child
of John Grisdale and Dinah Hunter) on 27 July
1835 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite. John, a woollen weaver, and Jane
were the parents of:

Stanley died
in Museum Square, Keswick and was buried on 16 November 1887 at St
Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, aged 75 years. Jane Stanley nee Grisdale died in Main Street, Keswick and was buried
on 23 April 1892 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, aged 76 years. |

inah Stanley was born in the town of Keswick, Cumberland, England and christened at
St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite on 24 March 1839, the second child of John
Stanley and Jane Grisdale. Dinah
married Thomas Smith of Haydon Bridge, Northumberland (born 23
December 1838 in Langley Castle, the son of George Smith and Elizabeth Hogg)
on 2 August 1866 at St John’s Church in Keswick. Dinah Stanley and Thomas Smith
were Stan and Lynne’s Great Grandparents and 2x
Great Grandparents respectively. For more information on their descendants
please click on the name of our ancestor George Smith above. Dinah Smith nee Stanley died in St John’s in the Vale near Keswick on 25 February 1908, aged
69 years. |
