Smith was born about 1804 in Tweedmouth near
Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland, England. George married Elizabeth Hogg of Berwick Upon Tweed (born 29 October 1804, the daughter of Adam Hogg
and Isabella Wright) New! about 1832,
although no marriage has as yet been found. George and Elizabeth lived in Tweedmouth for the first 5 years
or so of their marriage then about 1837 the family moved into Langley Castle,
near Haydon Bridge, Northumberland. The Castle was owned at that time by the
Crown and administered by the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich, London. George,
a woodsman, would have worked in the extensive forests that surrounded the
Castle at that time. The family lived in Langley Castle for over 30 years. In
the early 1880’s it was sold into private ownership. George and Elizabeth were the parents of:
George died in Langley Castle on 29 October 1862 aged 57 years and was buried at St Cuthbert’s, Haydon Bridge on 1 November 1862. Elizabeth Smith nee Hogg was living with her son Adam and his family at
Staindrop, Co. Durham at the time of her death on 15 December 1892, aged 87
years. |

Thomas, a blacksmith, and Dinah were
the parents of: · Kate Elizabeth Smith born 26 May 1867 at Crosthwaite’s Yard, Keswick and christened on 30 June 1867 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, married Isaac Dalton on 4 August 1888 at the church of St John’s in the Vale (more details below); · Sarah Jane Smith born 15 December 1868 in Keswick died 29 August 1870; · Thomas William Smith born 4 January 1872 in Keswick married Emma Jane Swindle (daughter of Isaac Swindle and Mary Atkinson) on 20 December 1894 (location unknown at this stage); · Isabella Smith born 13 November 1873 in Keswick married John Bishop of Barwell, Leicestershire on 18 July 1893 at the church of St John’s in the Vale, Keswick; · Mary Jane Smith born 15 November 1875 in Keswick married New Link! William Simeon Holyland of Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire on 30 January 1897 at the church of St John’s in the Vale, Keswick; · John George Smith born in 1877 in Keswick married New Link! Mary Malvina Kirkbride of Penrith, Cumberland on 15 April 1899 at the church of St John’s in the Vale, Keswick; and · Joseph Stanley Smith born 1881 in Keswick married New Link! Mary Agnes Hindmoor of Threlkeld, Cumberland on 19 September 1909 at St Mary’s, Threlkeld. Thomas’ death is unknown at this stage but was after
the 1901 Census. Dinah Smith nee Stanley died on 25 February 1908 at St John’s in the
Vale, Keswick, aged 69 years. |

Elizabeth Smith was born
26 May 1867 at Crosthwaite’s Yard, Keswick, Cumberland, England, and
christened on 30 June 1867 at St Kentigern’s, Crosthwaite, the eldest child
of Thomas Smith and Dinah Stanley. Kate married Isaac Dalton of Penrith (son
of Joseph Dalton and Margaret Shufflebotham)
in the church of St John’s in the Vale near Keswick on 4 August 1888: Isaac Dalton, 23, Bachelor, Labourer,
Threlkeld Quarry, Joseph Dalton, Carpenter Kate
Elizabeth Smith, 21, Spinster, Threlkeld Quarry, Thomas Smith, Blacksmith In the Church of St John’s in the Vale after Banns by John Taylor, Vicar In the Presence of Robert Jackson, Thomas
Burns, Isobel Smith, Leah Allinson
Kate Dalton nee Smith died at Ladykirk Road, Benwell, Newcastle
Upon Tyne in 1945 aged 77 years. |
