John appears to have had a number of occupations ~ recorded as a cartman on his children’s birth and christening records in the 1870’s then a joiner seaman (absent) on the 1881 Census ~ however by 1891 he was a grocer’s assistant in South Shields, Co Durham.

It is my understanding regarding Family Crests, or Coats of Arms, that having the same family name does not entitle us to be able to use the coat of arms/crest for that particular name as it was granted to a specific individual. However, if you can prove to be a descendant of the individual to whom the crest was granted then you can use it. With regard to Clan Badges on the other hand, apparently if you can prove Scottish ancestry then you are entitled to use the particular clan badge. In our case, our Kilgour ancestors were originally from Scotland (Perthshire) and Kilgour is a sept or branch of the MacDuff Clan, which originated in Perthshire, so we can wear the MacDuff Clan Badge! The motto "Deus juvat" means "God assists". (He certainly does!)
