Robert Edward Dalton & Matilda Bailiff

 


 

 

Robert Edward Dalton was born in Shap, Westmorland, England and christened on 14 July 1846 at St Michael’s, Shap, the only son of Joseph Dalton and his first wife Elizabeth Willan.

 

Robert married Matilda Bailiff of Barton, Westmorland (christened 22 October 1848 at St Michael’s, Barton, the daughter of Christopher Bailiff and Mary Wood) on 4 April 1874 at St Michael’s, Barton, Westmorland. The couple then moved to Manchester.

 

Robert, a joiner, and Matilda were the parents of:

 

·              Elizabeth Dalton born in Manchester, Lancashire in 1874 married Edward John Lane in 1903 in Middlesex;

 

·              Joseph Rowes Dalton born in Manchester in 1876 married Mary Loxley in 1905 in Staffordshire;

 

·              Mary Dalton born in Manchester in 1877 married William Piercy;

 

·              Eleanor Dalton born in Manchester in 1879;

 

·              Christopher Bailiff Dalton born in Manchester in 1882 died in Manchester in 1887 aged 4 years;

 

·              Richard Wood Dalton born in Manchester in 1885; and

 

·              Harry Dalton born in Manchester in 1888.

 

Matilda Dalton nee Bailiff died in Manchester in 1888, aged 39 years.

 

Robert was still [lodging] in Manchester in 1891 (his children were living with various relatives and youngest son Harry had been adopted) and by 1901 Robert had returned to Shap, Westmorland.

 

Robert Edward Dalton died in Westmorland in 1924, aged 77 years.
