William Joseph Coulson was born in Gunnerton, Northumberland, England and christened at St Giles, Chollerton on 7 November 1852, the seventh child of Edward Coulson and Mary Ann Bell.

William married Margaret Nicholson from Whickham (born about 1854, the daughter of Thomas Nicholson and Margaret Forster) in 1874 at St John the Baptist, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland.

William, a joiner, and Margaret were the parents of:

· Thomas Coulson born in Ryton, Co. Durham in 1876 or 1877;

· Elizabeth Jane Coulson born in Ryton in 1879 died in 1883, aged 4 years;

· Margaret Ann Coulson born 20 July 1881 in Crawcrook, Ryton married John Robert Wallace (born 27 October 1885 in Rothbury, Northumberland, the son of Elizabeth Wallace) on 25 November 1908 at Holy Trinity, Horsley, Rochester, Northumberland; and

· Emily Jane Coulson born in Ryton in 1884.

William Joseph Coulson died in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland in 1888, aged 35 years.

Margaret Coulson nee Nicholson died in Gateshead Workhouse, Gateshead, Co. Durham about 26 September 1906, aged 51 years.
