John Coulson & Dinah Nixon

 

 

 

 

John Coulson was born in Gunnerton, Northumberland, England and christened on 23 November 1817 at St Giles, Chollerton, the son of Thomas Coulson and Elizabeth Davison.

 

John married Dinah Nixon of Wark (born about 1815, the daughter of Robert Nixon) on 2 June 1849 at St Michael’s, Wark:

John, an agricultural labourer, and Dinah were the parents of:

 

·         Eleanor Thomasine Coulson born in Wark and christened on 30 June 1850 at St Michael’s, Wark married William Jones in 1872 at St John the Baptist, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Eleanor and William were the parents of:

 

·         John G Jones born Dipton, Co Durham about 1874;

·         Dinah Maud Jones born Elswick, Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1877;

·         Ethel Jones born Elswick in 1885; and

·         Blanche Jones born Elswick in 1888.

 

John, Dinah and Ellen, aged 2, immigrated to the United States in 1852 aboard the Excelsior where another child was born:

 

·         Thomas Coulson born in the United States of America about 1854 married Isabella Coward nee Carrick in 1889 at St Stephen’s, Elswick, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

 

John, Dinah and their two children returned to England prior to the 1861 Census.

 

John had a variety of occupations throughout his life including agricultural labourer, colliery cartman, shepherd and horsekeeper.

 

John Coulson died in Lanchester registration district, Co. Durham in 1894, aged 76 years.

 

Dinah Coulson nee Nixon died in Lanchester registration district, Co. Durham in 1895, aged 79 years.
