  • Joseph Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 9 December 1821 at St Giles, Chollerton married Elizabeth ? of Gloucester in the 1870’s. Joseph and Elizabeth did not have any children. Joseph took over older brother Edward’s position at Shotley Hall and was butler there for many years. Joseph died at Shotley Bridge about 30 November 1894, aged 73; and

 

  • Mary Magdalene Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 25 January 1824 at St Giles, Chollerton married widower Mark Douglass on 18 December 1847 at St Giles, Chollerton. Mary Magdalene and Mark lived in Newcastle Upon Tyne with Mark’s children from his first marriage. Mary Magdalene died in Newcastle in 1855 and Mark in 1856.

 

Elizabeth Coulson nee Davison died in Barrasford and was buried on 14 November 1858 at St Giles, Chollerton, aged 77 years.

 

Thomas Coulson died in Barrasford and was buried on 24 March 1861 at St Giles, Chollerton, aged 84 years.

  • Jane Coulson born Gunnerton Fell and christened 27 February 1842 at St Giles, Chollerton was still unmarried in 1881 and living with her parents at East Woodburn. Jane died at East Woodburn and was buried on 17 February 1886 at St Cuthbert’s, Corsenside, aged 44 years;

 

  • Joseph Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 25 December 1843 at St Giles, Chollerton died in Gunnerton and was buried at St Giles, Chollerton on 1 January 1847, aged 3 years;

 

  • Edward Coulson born in Gunnerton and christened 22 March 1846 at St Giles, Chollerton died in 1871, aged 25 years;

 

  • Elizabeth Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 29 October 1848 at St Giles, Chollerton married Anthony Hedley Dobson English on 27 April 1872 at St Cuthbert’s, Corsenside. Elizabeth and Anthony had one child, Mary Jane English, born about 1872 in Corsenside. Elizabeth English nee Coulson died prior to the 1881 Census;

 

  • Mary Ann Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 15 December 1850 at St Giles, Chollerton married John Brodie on 17 December 1874 at St Cuthbert’s Corsenside;

 

  • William Joseph Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 7 November 1852 at St Giles, Chollerton married Margaret ? about 1875 (please click on William Joseph’s  name for more details); New Link! 

 

  • George Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 4 February 1855 at St Giles, Chollerton married Mary Jane Bell on 24 February 1877 at the Register Office, Newcastle Upon Tyne (more details below); and

 

  • Margaret Coulson born Gunnerton and christened 5 June 1859 at St Giles, Chollerton married Hugh Mundle on 14 April 1888 at St Cuthbert’s, Corsenside.

 

Edward had a variety of professions. He began his career as a Servant at Shotley Hall, where he was working at the time of his marriage in 1840. In 1841/42 Edward and family were living at Gunnerton Fell and Edward was working as an Agricultural Labourer/Husbandman. At the time of Joseph’s christening in 1843 the family was living at Seldom Seen (?), Gunnerton and Edward was back in service and recorded as a Footman, which was the occupation given on his children’s christenings throughout the 1840’s. By 1850 at the time of daughter Mary Ann’s christening Edward was recorded as a Butler  (and throughout the 1850’s). By the mid 1860’s Edward and Mary Ann and family had moved to the Queen’s Head Inn, East Woodburn, where Edward was the Innkeeper, and a Farmer of 22 acres.

 

Mary Ann Coulson nee Bell died in East Woodburn and was buried 30 May 1889 at St Cuthbert’s, Corsenside, aged 76 years (actually would have been about 74).

 

Edward Coulson died in East Woodburn and was buried 10 June 1890, aged 70 years, at St Cuthbert’s, Corsenside.

In 1881 George and Mary Jane were living with George’s parents at the Queen’s Head Inn, East Woodburn. By 1891 George’s parents had died and George and family had moved to Capheaton where they lived in a cottage in the village and George was employed as a Master Tailor and Postmaster.

 

George Coulson died in Capheaton on 27 August 1915 aged 60 years.

 

Mary Jane Coulson nee Bell died at Manor Farm, Benton on 3 April 1937 aged 80 years.

 

While visiting England in 1985 George’s great grandson, Stanley Dalton Coulson, discovered the headstone of George and Mary Jane and three of their sons in the graveyard at St Bartholomew’s, Kirkwhelpington.

  • Winifred Ann Coulson (known as Freda) born 27 September 1902 at Sandybraes, Capheaton; and

 

  • Edward Robson Coulson born 7 February 1906 at Stamfordham.

 

Edward developed tuberculosis and on 4 August 1906 travelled to Natal, South Africa aboard the “Gaika” with younger brother Thomas (a journey of 49 days), probably in the hope of finding a cure in the hot, dry climate of the Orange Free State.

 

Edward Coulson died on 16 October 1906 (just two weeks after his arrival) at Rydal Mount near Witzieshoek in the Orange Free State, aged 29 years.

 

Laura Coulson nee Rogerson died in Morpeth, Northumberland on 26 January 1978, aged 98 years.

George Coulson died on 26 December 1977 at Newcastle General Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne, aged 76 years, and was buried at Bensham Cemetery, Gateshead, Co. Durham.

tanley Dalton Coulson was born in Benwell, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, the eldest son of George Robert Rogerson Coulson and Margaret Dalton.

 

Stan married Joan Bullerwell (born in 1931, the daughter of Thomas Rutter Bullerwell (temporarily unavailable) and Georgina Mould Oliver) in Scotswood, Newcastle Upon Tyne six months before immigrating to New Zealand aboard the ‘Southern Cross’.

 

Stan and Joan had two daughters, the eldest of whom is:

 

·         Lynne Georgina Coulson born in New Zealand.

 

Joan Coulson nee Bullerwell died in New Zealand in 1999, aged 67 years.
