ichard Cleugh was born about 1724 and married Ann Murton (born about 1727) on 27 July 1766 at St Cuthbert’s, Bedlington.

 

Richard, a labourer, and Ann were the parents of:

 

  • John Cleugh born in Bedlington and christened 3 May 1767 at St Cuthbert’s, Bedlington; and

 

  • William Cleugh born in Bedlington and christened 26 December 1773 at St Cuthbert’s, Bedlington married Dorothy Hunter on 20 December 1802 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley (more details below).

 

Ann Cleugh nee Murton died in Longhorsley on 2 March 1811 aged 83 years and was buried at St Helen’s, Longhorsley on 4 March 1811.

 

Richard died in Horsley Lane, Longhorsley and was buried on 7 January 1814 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley, aged 89 years.

illiam Cleugh was born in Bedlington, Northumberland, England and christened at St Cuthbert’s, Bedlington on 26 December 1773, the son of Richard Cleugh and Ann Murton.

 

William married Dorothy Hunter of Bedlington (christened 27 April 1777 at St Cuthbert’s, Bedlington, daughter of Matthew Hunter and Dorothy Clark) by banns on 20 December 1802 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley.

 

William, a labourer, and Dorothy were the parents of:

 

  • Dorothy Cleugh born 21 September 1803 in Longhorsley and christened at St Helen’s, Longhorsley on 27 November 1803 married James Rutherford on 11 May 1828 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley (more details below);

 

  • Ann Cleugh born 4 February 1805 in Longhorsley and christened at St Helen’s, Longhorsley on 17 May 1805;

 

  • Richard Cleugh born 4 September 1806 in Longhorsley and christened at St Helen’s, Longhorsley on 12 October 1806 married Mary Elliott on 26 October 1833 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley;

 

  • Sarah Cleugh born 10 August 1808 in Longhorsley and christened at St Helen’s, Longhorsley on 4 September 1808;

 

  • Barbara Cleugh born Longhorsley and christened 14 June 1812 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley married William Lambert on 21 February 1837 at All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne;

 

  • William Cleugh born Longhorsley and christened 6 March 1815 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley;

 

Dorothy Cleugh nee Hunter died in Horsley Lane, Longhorsley and was buried on 2 February 1817 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley, aged 38 years.

 

William’s death and burial are unknown at this stage.

orothy Cleugh was born on 21 September 1803 in Longhorsley, Northumberland, England and christened at St Helen’s, Longhorsley on 27 November 1803, the eldest child of William Cleugh and Dorothy Hunter.

 

Dorothy, a servant, had an illegitimate daughter:

 

  • Dorothy Ann Cleugh born Horsley Lane, Longhorsley and christened 25 January 1824 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley.

 

Dorothy married James Rutherford of Widdrington nr Morpeth on 11 May 1828 at St Helen’s, Longhorsley:

 

James Rutherford of this parish, Bachelor, and Dorothy Cleugh of this parish,

Spinster, were married in this Church by Banns, with consent of those

whose consent is required, this eleventh day of May in the year

One thousand eight hundred and twenty eight

Dorothy and James Rutherford, a labourer then innkeeper, had one child:

 

  • Rachel Rutherford born in Ashington, Northumberland and christened at St Andrew’s, Bothal on 26 April 1829 married Nicholas Mould about 1850 (a marriage has yet to be found).

 

James Rutherford died in North Shields in Apr-Jun 1871 aged 68 years.

 

Dorothy Rutherford nee Cleugh’s death has yet to be confirmed. There is a possible death in Jan-Mar 1872 in Morpeth RD, aged 69 years, which could be hers as Dorothy may have returned to Longhorsley.
