uke Bell was born about 1732 in Northumberland, England (possibly the son of Jacob Bell, farmer, of Halton and his first wife Ann ?) and married Hannah Yielder (christened 23 March 1742 at St John of Beverley, Acomb, the eldest child of Cuthbert Yielder and Hannah Davison) on 26 April 1764 at St Andrew’s, Corbridge.

Luke, a farmer, and Hannah were the parents of:

·              Jacob Bell born about 1767 in Halton married Ann Rutter on 28 April 1800 at St John of Beverley, Acomb. [At the moment a christening has not been found for Jacob and the evidence that he is the son of Luke and Hannah is circumstantial! The names of Jacob’s children, his age and birthplace make it likely that he belongs in this family. There is a gap in the children christened to Luke and Hannah of several years following their marriage and Jacob fits in this period. Any evidence to help confirm or deny this would be most welcome, thank you! J] (Please click on Jacob’s name for further details.)

·              Hannah Bell born in Halton and christened 11 February 1770 at St Oswald’s, Halton;

·              Luke Bell born about 1772 in the parish of Corbridge married Elizabeth Richardson on 17 May 1801 at St John the Baptist, Newcastle upon Tyne. [As with Jacob above the christening of Luke has not yet been located. There is another gap of several years in the christening of children to Luke and Hannah and Luke’s age, birthplace and names of his children also make it likely that he belongs in this family. Once again, any evidence to help confirm or deny this would be most welcome, thank you! J] (Please click on Luke’s name for further details.)

·              Sarah Bell born in Halton and christened 22 December 1776 at St Oswald’s, Halton died in Halton and was buried on 6 May 1777 at St Oswald’s;

·              Sarah Bell born in Halton and christened 16 April 1778 at St Oswald’s, Halton married Robert Urwin on 6 January 1805 at St Giles, Chollerton;

·              Margaret Bell born in Halton and christened 12 January 1783 at St Oswald’s, Halton married Henry Smith on 18 September 1803 at St Giles, Chollerton;

·              Cuthbert Bell born about 20 January 1784 in Halton was not christened but died in Halton and was buried 20 January 1784 at St Oswald’s, Halton;

·              Cuthbert Bell born in Halton and christened 22 May 1785 at St Oswald’s, Halton married Hannah Charlton on 9 May 1812 at St Mungo’s, Simonburn; and

·              Eleanor Bell born in Halton and christened 23 December 1787 at St Oswald’s, Halton.

Hannah Bell nee Yielder died at Rye Hill in the parish of Simonburn and was buried at St Oswald’s, Halton on 20 March 1816, aged 72 years.

Luke Bell died at Black Carts in the chapelry of Humshaugh (parish of Simonburn) and was buried at St Oswald’s, Halton on 18 March 1824, aged 92 years.

As you can see from the details above there are several key pieces of information missing! For example:

·        Luke Bell’s (1732-1824) christening has not been located.

·        Nor has the marriage of his [supposed] parents Jacob Bell and Ann ?

·        No christening has been found for Stan and Lynne’s ancestor Jacob born about 1767 in Halton.

·        No christening has been found for Luke born about 1772 in the “parish of Corbridge” (from the christening of one of his children).

·        No christenings for other children of Luke and Hannah who might have been born in the gaps between their marriage in 1764 and 1770 and again between 1770 and 1776.

·        No christenings have been found for any children born to Jacob Bell and Ann ?

·        No christenings have been found for any children born to Jacob Bell and Ann Gibson.

Other facts to consider:

·        Ann Bell (wife of Jacob Bell of Halton) was buried on 18 August 1742 at St Oswald’s, Halton.

·        Jacob Bell married Ann Gibson on 1 May 1744 at St Andrew’s, Corbridge.

·        Jacob Bell, farmer, died in Halton and was buried on 5 December 1780 at St Oswald’s, Halton.

·        Ann Bell, widow, died at Halton and was buried on 8 April 1792 at St Oswald’s, Halton.

It would be lovely to be able to put all the pieces together to complete this picture! Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated, thank you! J
