A Bit About Dargaville

Dargaville is a small town in Northland with a population of approximately 4,000 in the town and a further 5,000 in the surrounding districts. It was founded by Joseph McMullen Dargaville in 1872 as a private town, close to the thriving timber milling and ship building areas of Aratapu and Te Kopuru.
Situated beside the Northern Wairoa River, Dargaville is close to West Coast surf beaches and within easy driving distance from Trounson Kauri Park and the Waipoua Forest as well as the beautiful Kai-Iwi Lakes. Whangarei is 45 minutes away by road. As 90% of the country’s kumara is grown in the surrounding areas, Dargaville is known as “The Kumara Capital of New Zealand”.
