If you've been GF for a while, you'll know how difficult it can be to eat out. Over time you may have been able to build up a network of places you can safely eat, while at work or out and about. But it's not easy, and sometimes it's a matter of take your own food or go hungry! So you'll be used to carrying food with you.

You'll have got into the habit of reading labels and cross questioning the waiting staff at any restaurants you go to. This was probably a bit uncomfortable at first, but became more second nature after a while.

This page is to list bakeries, cafes, restaurants and accomodation in NZ that offer GF alternatives. It's only a small list so far, so please help me out by letting me know what's good in your area.

Just remember this list is a good place to start. You still need to take responsibility yourself and double check that things are safe. Recheck the list of hidden gluten, if in doubt.

This won't be a comprehensive list. There are places that are often easy to find gluten free food, such as:

  • Ethnic restaurants, especially those whose meals are rice based - eg. Indian, Chinese, Japanese and other asian foods; Turkish or Greek
  • Top end restaurants, that make their food from scratch, from good quality ingredients

So these types of places probably won't be listed individually. The places that are listed will be identified with an icon:

= bakeries & grocery stores = places to eat = accomodation

Northland:

  • Quatro Cafe, Mangawhai Village, Ph: 09 431 5226. Gluten free meals & pizzas.
  • Waihoihoi Women's Lodge (near Waipu) - a country retreat which caters for special dietary needs

There is a webpage already covering GF sources in Palmerston North, so here's the link to go straight to it.

Nelson/Bays:

  • Zest, in Nelson, was the most impressive wheat and gluten free cafe we came across on a recent South Island trip. As well as savoury dishes, there were at least 5 GF cakes and desserts on offer. We visited the small cafe in Bridge St, but there is also a larger deli and cafe in Church St.

Marlborough:

  • Karaka Point Lodge, Queen Charlotte Sound, Picton are a Boutique/Luxury Bed and Breakfast who cater for GF needs. They also have resources for GF on their website, see links at the bottom of the page.
  • The Store, at Kekerengu, is a cafe with an awesome ambience and beautiful gardens whose GF orange cake was an unexpected treat, as we stopped in on our drive down to Kaikoura from the Picton ferry. They usually have 2 GF cakes on offer. It has won the Casio Award for the best restaurant in Marlborough.
