World War 1 Sources: some useful publications

Here are some publications that may be of particular interest to World War 1 war gamers. In some cases these references are accompanied by reviews, or comments from the book jacket, that may help you to decide whether  or not to add these titles to your own reference library.  The reviews represent the opinions of the reviewers. I have chosen these titles because I have personally found them to be particularly useful and interesting, or because they come highly recommended by others.

Author: Ernst Junger

"A memoir of astonishing power, savagery and ashen lyricism, Storm of Steel depicts Ernst Junger's experience of combat in the German front line - leading raiding parties, defending trenches against murderous British incursions, and simply enduring as shells tore his comrades apart. One of the greatest books to emerge from the catastrophe of the First World War, it illuminates like no other work not only the horrors but also the fascination of a war that made men keep fighting on for four long years...Michael Hofman's superlative translation retains all the coruscating vitality of the original." Niall Ferguson

Author: Paddy Griffith

"In this book a renowned military historian studies the evolution of British infantry tactics during World War 1 and challenges traditional interpretations that portray British participation as a series of tragic tactical debacles.

Griffith does an admirable job cataloguing the various British responses to the intractable and challenging tactical problems of the western front." Col Richard M Swain, Military Review

Author: Paddy Griffith

"This volume details the different styles of fortification used on the western front throughout the course of the war, from the early ditches of 1914 to the complicated systems of 1918. It explains the development of the 'defence in depth' German approach and the British reaction to it, as well as illustrating the importance of the pre-war forts, particularly Verdun."

Author: Yves Buffetaut

"1917 SPRING OFFENSIVES : Arras, Vimy, le Chemin des Dames"

"A massively illustrated account of a joint British-Canadian-French assault in World War I. Previous books on the 1917 offensives have concentrated on a single sector of the front: the British at Arras, the Canadians at Vimy, or the French at Chemin des Dames. However, the offensive was truly an Allied effort, an aspect fully covered by the author.

Buffetaut's detailed narrative is supported by an extraordinary collection of 300 rare or hitherto unpublished photographs from government archives and private collections."

Author: David Lomas, Ed Dovey

"In the autumn of 1914 the original British Expeditionary Force faced a heavily reinforced German drive. Field Marshal Sir John French, the British Commander-in-Chief, had sent his men north in an attempt to take the fight into Flanders, so they could fight across open ground. History tells us that this was not to be the case. David Lomas chronicles the first of the trench-warfare battles, where lines that would remain almost static for the rest of the war were established. Although the Germans failed to reach the channel ports, the death knell had rung for the BEF, which was virtually wiped out in this brave defence.

Author: Author: David Lomas, Ed Dovey

When the First World War broke out in August 1914 the Imperial German Army mistakenly assumed that the BEF – 'that contemptible little army' – would be easily defeated. They were stopped in their tracks by the numerically inferior British force, whose excellent marksmanship cost the closed packed German ranks dear. Eventually forced to fall back by overwhelming German numbers, the British carried out a masterful fighting retreat across Belgium and northern France. At Mons, nine and a half British battalions held four German divisions at bay for an entire day. This book examines not just the battle of Mons itself but also the ensuing British retreat including the actions at Le Cateau and Villers-Cotteręts.
