Trench scenery ideas

Modeling trench sections in a workable form for the average 'gamer is quite a challenge. Few of us have the space or resources to fight over specially constructed terrain boards, so some other solution is required. A significant issue for western front actions in particular is how to model trench terrain on a flat war games board. The photos below are the solution chosen by Chris Salander. The  sections were constructed for Chris by Bill Hogan of Florida (Bill can be contacted at hoganwatgtedotnet, and is apparently happy to construct terrain on commission). Thanks to Chris Salander for the photos, and permission to use them here.

These trench sections are Styrofoam covered in flocking. Chris comments that the timber fronts are made from 'coffee stirrers'. In my own equivalents I used balsa wood, with the planking drawn in with a pen, leaving the lines as indentations in the balsa wood.
This photo shows a MMG position in the front of a trench section.
These sections have been used as a front and a back for the trench section. Of course you could choose to represent only the front of the trench line if you chose. Some of Chris's figures give the sense of scale and size for the sections.
Chris comments that if he wants to represent a mortar position, he simply places the MMG position at the back of the trench rather than at the front.
