Situated at 23 Torrens Road, Christchurch, New Zealand, Rose Cottage is a site of visual splendor. Bill and Noeleen Jones' cottage dates back to 1883 and retains many of its picturesque features such as the original leadlight windows. Perhaps the most stunning feature of Rose Cottage is the symphony of colour from approximately 500 varieties of roses and various other floral species, including thousands of spring bulbs. The backyard is magnificently laid out as vibrant blooms form a decorative frame.

Sit for a while in the garden seats and drink in the lushness of the surrounds and the heady perfume of the many different roses. Wander amongst the flowers and you will find a goldfish pond with old fashioned pump and various other breeds of flowers such as peonies, daffodils, and tulips. Rose Cottage is an unparalleled delight, sure to impress both gardeners and lovers of historic properties alike. Bill and Noeleen are fabulous hosts to a site which shows off the sheer magnificence of the floral world.

History

Originally built as workers quarters for staff at the former Sunnyside Hospital it was eventually sold into private ownership. Over the years subsequent owners neglected to maintain the property until the cottage became run down and the grounds overgrown. It was in this state that the Jones purchased the property in 1990. After clearing 38 trees from the 649 sq metre section and eradicating noxious weeds, such as convolvulus and oxalis, Bill and Noeleen began the painstaking task of restoring the cottage and transforming the grounds into the award-winning garden that it is today.

Location

Travel south down Lincoln Rd towards Halswell, crossing over the lights at Lyttleton St and turn right at the Caltex Station into Torrens Rd.
