Later that day, still not fully recovered, but you wouldn't know it to look at her, Kaitlen stepped out of the lift, and headed for the door to the hotel's second Penthouse, :: Well, if he's meeting me here, he's got to have money ... let's see what happens. ::
She reached up to knock on the door, but she holds the knock as the door was opened to reveil a tall blond.
"Ahh Miss Mornn, right on time come in, " she said as she stepped aside.
She nodded formally, and walked in, "Your directions were hard to get wrong."
a medium sized man, dressed in a black Italian suit was sitting in the lounge, as Kaitlen entered he said in a thick swiss acescent, "Good afternoon Kaitlen, thank you for coming, please have a seat, care for a drink?"
She sat down and smiled back, "No thank you ... so, what is this 'proposition' you wanted me to listen to?"
Oliver said to his assident, "Maria." and she went over to a table against the wall, and open the black briefcase siting there, from which she produced a black box and a folder, and pushed a button on the box.
"Kaitlen," Oliver continued, "I represent a faction that is concerned with the resent events in the Americas, and combined with that of the civil war in Genosha, and the loss of the Avengers, We see a need for Europe to have it's own defenders." With that he nods to Maria, and she then offers the folder to Kaitlen. the file is Marked confidential, and labelled simply 'Kaitlen Mornn'.
Kaitlen blinked, then looked down and, opening the folder to the first page, began to read it.
Kaitlen slowly read though the folder, her expression getting more and more angry. She finally finished, and looked up, "Just who the hell are you?"
Deep in her eyes there was a faint blue-white flickering ... but it could have just been a reflection from the light.
"Firstly, We didn't compile that folder, one of my associates managed to get it off Black Air and replace it with a 'less reveiling' copy. What you do with that file is up to you, I gave it to you with no stings attached." Oliver replied with only a hint of concern, "but to answer your question more directly, the 'public' me is Oliver Dubois, Swiss businessman, but Privetly, I'm a member of a origination concerned with trying to prevent a World War III, that will not be divided along political boundaries, but along generic structures. You asked what the 'proposition' I was tabling well here it is I'm Assembling a team of 'concerned citizens' to be for Europe to which the Avengers where to the the US. Quite simply Kaitlen you fit the bill, and I do know you have simuler concerns due to your work with the Mutants right group of yours. but either way, with out that file, Black air just thinks you a Lawyer studying to pass the Bar, with pro mutant views, nothing more. but surly you know the old adage(sp?) 'With Greater Power, comes greater responsibility'. You with us?"
Kaitlen took a deep breath, and visibly calmed down, "I'm sorry for the reaction ... I've put a lot of work into covering up what I am. I don't like the idea of somebody else knowing the truth."
She closed the folder, and put it in her briefcase, then looked up at Oliver, "But why me? The Avengers were a group of supers ... powerful talents that could be really effective," she held out a hand, and concentrated, pulling together a ball of glowing energy above her hand, "the best I can do is this ... on a really good day I can produce a flash that could blind someone at night ... and I can shut down someone else's computer from across the room for a few seconds ... I'm just not in the Avengers' league."
Kaitlen let the energy ball disperse back into her hand, "Wether I belive that adage or not, I don't exactly have great power ... unless you want a legal rep for your 'team'.
"Anyway, if you had studied me as closely as this lot have, you know I don't agree with the 'super teams' ... they just make us stand out more, make us an easer target. I have no wish to become hated like the X-Men are."
She sighed softly, the Irish lilt in her voice becoming more pronounced, "Oliver, I'm just a lawyer with an odd genetic structure, and a cute party trick. I'm not an X-Man, I'm not one of the Fantastic Four, and I'm not an Avenger ... grab someone like that 'Wraith' in today's paper, they seem much more your style.
"The legal services are yours, but I expect you have much better lawyers of your own."
"Kaitlen, you also underestimate yourself, while you are untrained with your powers, according to those field reading you have barely even begun to tap into your gifts, that aside, you can already do more then any of the original X-Men could do, save possibly Cyclops when they first tangled with Magneto all those years ago. Also it is your non 'gun-ho' style, and knowlage of the ECC laws, that would see that this team would not be just another militant group, lord knows we have enough of those around.
"Ok Kaitlen, answer me this, what made the Avengers cheered as Heros, while the X-Men were so feared?"
Kaitlen tilted her head, "And if I don't want this great power? I've met 'high powered' mutants ... and it's brought them nothing but pain.
"If you don't wish to have your gifts, well I don't have access to anything that can total remake your DNA, Though the was a case of a 'First order' Mutant who had her powers turned off a few years ago, lets just say she didn't enjoy effects."
"So, you want someone on the team that can tell the others when they are about to break the law? I take it you mean other that just using their powers here."
She sighed, "I really don't know ... the Avengers just ... they were before the anti-mutant hatred ... and they weren't all mutants, the X-Men seem to attract hatred just by existing ... and even more so after that mess in the states.
"So, you want us to be a bright and shining light for others to follow? I've got a vested interest in people not knowing who I am ... and how an I supposed to keep a job if I'm off causing mayhem all over the place?"
"You have the idea of our goals, as to holding down a job, you are an up and coming lawyer, and I always looking for such talents in my financial empire. " Oliver said with a grin, "The pay is good. and we expariance keeping peoples identies secret."
Kei's Storythere was a knock on the door, as Maria walked across the room to answer the door Oliver said to Kaitlen, "Oh you know how you suggested I contact the 'Wraith'." then as Maria opened the door he stood up and said, "Ah Miss Kuonji please come in and have a seat." he said as he gestured to an empty chair, "Miss Kei Kuonji, I Would like you to meet Miss Kaitlen Mornn, Kaitlen this is Kei. "Miss Kuonji you care for some refreshments?"
Kei bowed curtly to Oliver, "Mr Dubois I presume, I'll pass on the refreshments. I ate before I got here." turning towards Kaitlen, taking in as much of the room as possible, she nods her head "Miss Mornn".
Kaitlen's expression was unreadable, she simply nodded, "Miss Kuonji." :: The Wraith? Maybe he actually is serious about this ... hmm ... ::
As she took the seat offered to her, she enquired, "So you apparently know of my talent, and have a proposition for me. Might I enquire what would happen if I declined the offer?"
Kaitlen quietly commented in a dry tone, "He claims there are no strings attached ... " she looked over at Oliver, "though I notice that he's already blown your cover to me ... " She reached down and took a sip from her coffee.
"Ah but, it depends on your definition of blown," Oliver replied to the accusation "As part of the Job offer I made to you was for a Lawyer on Retainer, hence this entire conversation is subjected to Client confidentiality]. And yes Miss Kuonji this dose have to do with your Talent. and nothing will happen to you if you decline, and you will actually be in a better position regardless as your chose of the outcome." With that he nodded to Maria, how produce a folder labelled Kei Kuonji, Top Secret, and handed it to Kei. Then Oliver continued, "For that folder is no longer in the hands of Black Air, and they don't know it"
"Black Air? I've never heard of them..." Kei said as she studied the folder.
Kaitlen looked up from her coffee, "You are trusting a lot to my
sense of professional honor here ... " her voice took on a bitter tone,
"I've seen people that I though had far more honor then I blow
mutants covers to the wrong people ... so I've learnt that trusting
anyone is very dangerous."
"I have almost as much to loss in putting this proposition to you, as you
do, you may as noticed that Mutant Sympathisers are not in flavor as
well, also we may be placing our lives in each other hands so where dose
the trust begin?" Oliver replied "Though I do take your point, but take
soleus in the fact From me to 'incremate' you, I have to 'incremate'
myself"
Kaitlen looked down at the folder beside her, "Even without that, a
few words in the right place could kill any hopes I have of a career
... " she looked back up at Oliver, "either way though, it doesn't
make a lot of difference ... if you're as good as you claim, then I
want to be working for you ... and if you're not, then I don't have a
lot of choice."
At the sound of her councillors name, Kei looked up from the folder she had been perusing "Clair's got something to do with this? Why didn't you say earlier?" As she put the folder on the coffee table in front of her, Kei resumed, "I am now more curious as to you proposition."
"Claire and I are members of a origination concerned with trying to prevent a World War III, that will not be divided along political boundaries, but along generic structures. The 'proposition' I am tabling here is I'm assembling a team of 'concerned citizens' to for Europe to which the Avengers where to the the US. As you have already shown an interest in crime-fighting, you seem a likely candidate, we can offer a safe base of operations, equipment, and training. Kei, will you join us?"
Kei lent back in the chair as she contemplated the offer deeply. "OK, count me in," she said after a second or so "did I hear you mention refreshments earlier?"
Kaitlen looked over at Kei, an expression of real supprise crossing
her face for an instant, then she slowly shook her head sighing
faintly, "At least she has her priorities worked out I suppose ... "
"Kei, yes i did, what can i offer you?" Oliver asks
"A nice, strong coffee, black, would go down a treat."
Maria gets Kei her coffee, when she has her drink Oliver raises his cup in acknowledgement of Kaitlen's toast, as does Kei
"Ok Now How soon can you two tie up your affairs here in London? Is there anything you need? I already has an expense account set up." and with that Maria produces two Gold Credit cards from the Bank of Zurich made to 'Dubois International' and hands them to the pair.
As she took the card Kei thought for a moment "I'll need to give notice at the bar, but I'm off for the next two days. Apart from that, I'll only need a day or two to arrange things." the last said looking fondly at the credit card.
Kaitlen looked over at Key, then down at her own card, "It depends
how fast I have to move, I'd like a couple of weeks, I have a job to
quit, a flat to put into storage, and some friends to ... arange some
help for ... "
:: At least Samantha has met Susan ... though what
she's going to think of Mike, ah well, the lass said she needed
pratice, and sure as anything, that group need a lawyer on call ::
She hmmmed, "I can cut that down to a week if I have to ... and I
suppose it doens't matter if I don't get the last bit of pay." She
finshed her drink, "That anwser your questions?"
"Take as long as nessary to tie up your affairs, Though the sooner you finish the sooner we can get training, and the less likly we are to be couaght unprepared. Though I would like one or Both of you to come with me to talk to the third canditae, it will take at least a full day, mayby two, as he is in Russia. But if you can not make it, feal free to make use of this room, in my apcence."
Kaitlen collected her gear and stood up, "When you get back, you
know where to contact me ... " she paused, then smiled faintly, "Take
care of yourself, I'd rather not quit my current job only to find my
new employer has been blown up by a rogue mutant."
"Yes I know how to get in contact with you, but you don't me, here take this" Oliver says handing her a buisnice card "Just menchien it is about the new security team, an you will be redirected stright to me."
She headed out the door, off do to some packing, and a lot of very fast talking to some friends.
"And You Kei? you able to make the trip with me?"
"Hai. Like I said, I've got the next couple of days spare. I'll want to move my wheels somewhere safer before going anywhere but thats all."
"Why not take it with you?, there is enough room for it onboard the Jet." Oliver surgested, then to Maria "get the Limo ready we will leave shortly."
"Will there be anything else?" Maria asked.
"Yes also inform the pilot to prepare the Jet to leave for the next stop." with that Maria left the room, to go get things orgnized.
"Shall we go?" Olver asked of Kei
"Lead on"
Oliver leads Kei to the Frount door of the hotel, where the limo is waiting, and Kei has the Vale bring he back out frount, to find it has been washed. she then follows the limo to a Privet air field on the out skirts of london, and follows trough the security and to a hanger. the field Kei knows is an excluseve air club that Heatrow keeps clear an airway for. inside the hanger she see a 55' foot jet, with a wingspan of about 36', with serperior stramlining and two rear engin pods, also the back opened up as a crgo bay, with ram curretly lowered, this thing just reaks 'fast' though noting that can't be done.
Oliver hops out of the Limo, and asks "What do you think?"
Kei drew alongside the limo letting her bike idle beneath her, she gazed at the plane for a second or two before letting out a whistle of approval. "I like" is all she can say as her eyes drink in the sleek lines of the craft.
Oliver then pulls out a black object from his pocket and points it at the plane, and the back lowers as a cargo ramp revieling a jeep.
"You can park you bike in there" he says with pride.
Then walks up the ramp and through a presure hatch into the main room.
Kei guided her bike up the ramp after Oliver, still impresed by the sleek lines of the plane. She heard from inside:
"Where to sir?"
"The Siberian co-ordinates"
"Very good sir."
"Kei do you need any help securing your bike?" Oliver calls in the cargo bay, as the Bay hatch raises, and the pilot can be heard on the radio to the tower.
"Ile." Kei responded as she located some webbing to stow her bike. "It's all set back there." she said as she wandered into the main cabin. "So, what happens now?"
"We have about 3 hours until we reach are destination. There we shall try to recruit the next Promasing indvidual to the Group, an Young Metamorph named Uri, though I supstet that isn't the full extent of his powers, he seems from my contacts, to be another Forge or Stark in the making, though due him being a Gypsy's son he hasn't recived the education he truly needs, though he is a mancnic almost with out peer. His parents know that I'm coming as a head of a Scolaship trust, that is offering to pay for his Education in a Privet Swiss school, as i'm not sure wither his faimly knows yet the full extent of his 'Gifts' though there where a strange twist in his fild scan that has me thinking... never mind that isn't important. You of course will be will be intro ducused as an asoate of mine, that has also benifited from this 'scholarship'. Do you have any particulare questions to ask as we have some time to kill."
"Well, as I'm being introduced as an associate, I guess I won't need these" Kei said reaching behind her back and withdrawing a tangle of leather straps an a pair of tonfa. Placing the bundle next to the seat she started to stand up, "Or this..." she said as she gathered up her 'Wraith' costume which was now lying on the freshly vacated seat. "Do I have enough time to put these in my bike before we take off?"
A grin apreas on Oliver's Face. "Kei, my dear, we allredy have."
.oO He must be pulling my leg, I haven't felt any movement yet! Oo. Kei steeped over to a window and raided the blind expecting to be able to see the tarmac, but all she can see is the clear blue sky above and wisps of clouds. Kei blinked a couple of times, and steeped back. "But, but... When?" is all Kei can manage to stammer out.
"Soon after the cargobay doors closed behind you. 'Pegasus' is capable of VTOL and can copansate for asselaration in all but the quickest changes in course. the only problem with the desight is while the engins dont need an atmosphere to work, the powerplant doses. but i can't get a license to run a necualr powerplant, as my Doctorate is in genetics not nuclear physics.'"
Kei remained staring out the window for a few moments, then shook her head before walking (hesitantly at first) back into the cargo hold to store her costume.
after sometime passed nonchalantly on the plane when the pilot calls back Approching landing co-ordanances, sir.
"All ready?," Oliver says taking a look at his watch, "Well Kie, it looks like we are early."
"We're early? Can we get a bite to eat before the meeting, I tend to get peckish due to travel." Kei commented oblivious to the chaos below.
"I'm sure there is at least an energy bar in the cubards by the bar, though do you realy want to be seen walking out of the plane eating?"
Wandering over to the cupboards Kei opened them, rummaged around till she found the bar. She looked at it, rummaged around in the cupboard again before saying, rather dejectedly, "This all? It'll never do, I guess I can wait". With that she slipped the energy bar into a jacket pocket. "Ready when you are Ollie."
"Well i havn't had a chance to stock the shelves yet." With a push of a button the pasagenger door lowers to form some stairs to the ground. there are a couple standy near by waiting as Oliver and Kei decentded.
{"Welcome to your Camp, Mr Duboise, and Miss?"} The Male said in Russian.
{"Miss Kei Kuonji, she is an Assouate of mine; But alas she dose >not yet speek russian, Though i'm happy to translate."} Oliver suppiles, to Kei.
"Kei meet Mr & Mrs Bindunski, Uri's parents."
Kei gave a short formal bow "A pleasure."
{"I will go get Uri"} Mrs Bindunski anouses be for she leaves for another part of the camp.
a few moments later Kei notices out the corner of her eye a blur of motion heading into the Jet.
{"Mr Bindunski, You must be very proud of your son, not many people successfully get a full scholarship, for the engineering course"}
{"Yes We all are proud of what he basically Self taught himself, and to catch the attention of such a exclusive school as yours."}
Looking back at the Jet, "Ahh, Ollie? I think I saw something dart into the Jet."
"Can you please check it out?"
"Sure, I'll go have a look."
Kei enters the jet and glances around, there is somthing not quite right with the passager section, that she can't quite put her finger on.
Sitting down to think what might possably be wrong, it clicks, "There's one too many chairs!"
after a short period (about 4 seconds) Kei has the feeling of 'safety' come to your mind .
.oO(Well, things seem alright. Apart from the chair nothings amiss. The plane probably has a gizmo or something to adjust the number of chairs... I thought we where only here to pick up one person though...)Oo.
a second later Kei also gets the felling of 'youth'.
.oO(Hmmm, Ollie ought to have met whoever it is we're here for, I wonder how young he is... he may be cute... I should probably go out and meet him, tell Ollie I couldn't find anything odd here...)Oo.
Kei stands up and heads out of the plane, as she reaches the door...
another second latter Kei recives an image of one of the passanger chairs in your mind (with no frame of referance).
She stops and looks back at the room with a puzled look on her face. .oO(Odd, perhaps things aren't all roses... What is going on here...)Oo.
Kei heads down the ramp and looks around for Oliver. Meanwhile the chair Kei resently vacated disoves to its blob states and ozzes over and into the cuboard from which Kei earlyer reteved here energy bar from, closing it behind it. Follow Kei Back outside
