To remain healthy, muscles need a chance to relax and recover during activity. In most forms of activity this happens naturally as different muscles are contracted and relaxed throughout the activity. Unfortunately modern life has introduced many situations where we often maintain a fixed position for extended periods of time. This often reduces the opportunity for muscles to relax and recover. We are often distracted by TV, computers, driving, reading, talking on the telephone, or become so focused on our work, that we don't notice when our muscles are becoming fatigued. As a result muscles don't get a chance to recover, leading to pain and eventually even injury.

Poor ergonomics, poor work habits, and stress can all lead to excessive or prolonged muscle tension. To remain healthy we need to reduce tension resulting from poor ergonomics or posture, improve our work habits to include more breaks and movement, and learn to relax!
