Primal Elfs are the lessened survivors from Before Time, and were once almost demigods. Now they are merely powerful mortals. They average 6' 5" tall and typically weigh just over 180 pounds, looking like the tall, exceedingly noble elfs they are. Their hair is usually silver, and their eyes black. Most Primal Elfs prefer dark, sombre colours in their clothing, often grey, black or deep blue, to better reflect their fallen condition. They are concerned with proper etiquette and manners, and are quick to anger when shown disrespect.
Primal Elfs live on fruits and grains and hunt for fresh meat, which makes up more of their diet than it does that of other elfs. Once unaging Primal Elfs now apparently age like other mortals, though just what their lifespan is is unknown, as most died by violence and accident before ageing affected them, and the survivors are incognito and/or have spent long periods in suspended animation or have otherwise side-stepped the normal effects of time.
As they are from before Elfs split into their modern kindreds Primal Elves speak Ancient Elven, and most also know Common and Elven.
Elves are cautious warriors and choose the time and place of a fight if at all possible, maximizing their advantage by using spells, magic items and pre-prepared traps (both magical and mundane) as much as possible. They prefer to fir arrows and cast spells from concealment and retreat before they are found, repeating this manoeuvre until all of their enemies are defeated.
They prefer longbows, rapiers, and longswords. In melee, Primal Elfs are as graceful and deadly as their lesser descendants, with combat styles that range from baroque to starkly simple, depending on the individual, but always beautiful to observe. Their wizards often cast spells (especially Will based ones) on top of their own forces, knowing that they are unlikely to affect their own side.
Primal Elfs possess the following racial traits.
- +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution, +2 Intelligence, +2 Charisma.
-Medium size.
-A Primal Elf's base land speed is 30 feet.
-Immunity to sleep spells and effects, and a +2 racial saving throw bonus on Will saves against spells and spell-like abilities.
-Unearthly Grace (Su): A Primal Elf adds their Charisma modifier as a bonus on all their saving throws, and as a deflection bonus to their Armour Class. These bonuses do not stack with similar bonuses such as a paladin's Divine Grace.
-Low-light vision.
-Spell-Like Abilities: Primal Elfs can use the following spell-like abilities: at will - detect magic, read magic; 1/day - dancing lights, mage hand, open/close, prestidigitation. Caster level equals the Primal Elf's character level.
-Weapon Proficiency: Primal Elfs are automatically proficient with the longsword, rapier, longbow, composite longbow, shortbow, and composite shortbow.
- +2 racial bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks. An elf who merely passes within 5 feet of a secret or concealed door is entitled to a Search check to notice it as if she were actively looking for it.
-Automatic Languages: Ancient Elven, Elven. Bonus Languages: Common, Draconic, Gnoll, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Sylvan.
-Favoured Class: Wizard.
-Level adjustment +2.
Challenge Rating: Primal Elfs with levels in NPC classes have a CR equal to their character level. Primal Elfs with levels in PC classes have a CR equal to their character level +1.
