Crete 2002

These pages are a write up of a 2 day demo game played as part of Call To Arms, a wargaming competition weekend staged by the Wellington Warlords on 3rd-4th of August at the St Pat's hall in Wellington, New Zealand.

This originaly came about from a desire of mine to play a game of Spearhead for longer than the five hour's normally avaliable on saturdays at the local club. I had read of the wargaming weeks stages by Kathies Comics in England where huge battles were staged over large areas involving thousands of stands. The idea to replay Crete came about from a discussion with fellow members of the Spearhead yahoo group( thanks , Nic). Also the pervious year the New Zealand Army had celebrated the 60th anivesary of the battle. The actions of the 2nd NZ division around the Maleme airfield and prison valley were central to the loss of the island. Crete was also the first and last large scale parachute drop attempeted by the germans in world war 2. It was a close battle that could have gone either way, therefore perfect for a refight. Now, read on....
