Working with Fractions

 

Most modern calculators have a most useful button, .

It is well worth making its acquaintance. 

 

Worked examples.

 

1.          Convert  to a decimal.

 

7  16 = displays the fraction as 716

 

Pressing the fraction button  again gives 0.4375

 

If you continue pressing the  button the display toggles back and forth between 0.4375 and 716

 

 

2.         Convert 0.45 to its simplest fraction.

This is easy when you realize 0.45 is  

 

Enter 45  100 =

 

The answer, 9 20, means    “nine twentieths.”

 

Wait.

There is more. 

Keep pressing the  button.

The answer will toggle backwards and forwards between
 the decimal format 0.45 and the fraction format 9 20.

 

That is a handy check that the decimal was entered correctly.

 

 

3.            Convert 0.36 to its simplest fraction.

 

Let’s suppose you hadn’t immediately recognised 0.36 as  

No matter.

 

0.36 is  +  since the first digit after the decimal point is tenths and the second is hundredths.

 

Enter 3  10 + 6  100 =

The answer, 9 25, means  “nine twenty-fifths”
