Feeding the inner MAM

MAM = middle-aged male.

Reading New Scientist, I came across an interesting statement.
Here is the gist of it.

The body remembers the ratio of fat to protein that existed before starvation and maintains that ratio during starvation. The underlying principle is that in order to maximise one's chances of surviving famine, fat and protein run out together. (Whether this is really true or not I don't know. For the moment I have to no reason to doubt it. And survival comes right up there in my list of priorities.) Reading this fict about starvation had a profound effect on my thinking.

IMHO starvation as a basis for a weight loss diet is flawed.

Then I read an article in a Zone Diet book. There they talked of providing the correct amount of protein for one's lean body mass. Suddenly I had a sense of how a scuptor feels when they think of the form within the marble. My understanding of the successful use of imagery in acquiring and maintaining a healthy body weight is to HAVE ONE IMAGE. .. the desired image.

IMHO comparatives fail because the brain maintains two images and the one with the greater emotional charges isn't the one that's desired. This is why I wasn't driven be a desire of losing weight but of achieving optimal health. For me that meant 100 grams of protein per day to maintain my lean body mass. For someone else it could mean quite a different daily protein intake. One source of information on protein requirements to maintain lean body mass is a Zone Diet book. In my ignorance I can't suggest a better one. Whether I actually have 100 grams of protein a day I have no idea. From a neurological point of view it may be quite immaterial, the point being that I began and will continue to maintain my lean body mass.

This illustrates a nelping dictum, "Begin and continue with success."
