Dog trainers know a thing of two.
Take house training puppy.

Of course you could take any habit that needs rehabituating in a new way.

Such things I leave to the wisdom of your unconscious mind.

For the moment you could give me your conscious attention.

Here is the recipe for training a pup to ask to go out for a wee.

Place a large sheet of newspaper near where the door opens. Watch for the pup asking to go out. Sometimes you’re lucky. Sometimes not. Each time the pup wees on the paper, next time fold the paper making the paper smaller. The pup is then funnelled closer and closer to the door opening. The signal they send is more and more specific. It is easy to see the analogy with a funnel. The initial target is so wide it is hard to miss. Begin with success and end with success. The behaviour gets funnelled into a more and more specific path. Then something happens. Funnels don’t go on for ever. At point the behaviour flows through into a new behaviour. The waiting behaviour is anchored to the end of the door that opens.
