The
OM steel string cutaway guitar pictured below was made for Wellington musician
and songwriter, Piripi Whaanga. The instrument features extensive top and
rosette
inlay designed
with Piripi, featuring Tu Tangata brandishing his tewha tewha astride a Taniwha.
Tu Tangata is a Maori phrase meaning to stand up for yourself. The design
is a contempory take on traditional Maori design, and it is constructed in
ebony, rewa rewa, dyed maple and paua.
The guitar's top is sitka spruce with rosewood back and sides. The headstock
is veneered with Tasmanian blackwood, and the body bound with rewa rewa. The
multiple radiused fretboard is ebony and the neck laminated from mahogany and
tawa, with a truss rod accessible through the sound hole.
The
instrument is made for acoustic and live playing and is fitted with a Fishman
Prefix Pro pick up system with on board controls.
