Ulcinj/Ulqin
[Yugoslavia, 1999]
Ulcinj is the last town in Montenegro before the Albanian border, and
its population is predominantly Albanian. During the Kosovo refugee
crisis and while Serb militias were "ethnically cleansing"
almost the entire population of Kosovo and killing some 12,000 people in
the process, the townspeople of Ulcinj were housing and helping thousands
of refugees. In a gesture of thanks, the UN's refugee organization
put on a concert for the town. The children turned up in fancy dress and
had a great time.
