Crac des Chevaliers [Syria, 1995] The greatest and best preserved of a string of crusader castles around the eastern Mediterranean, Crac des Chevaliers (Qala'at al-Hosn in Arabic) was built by French knights in the 12th century. It guards the only major pass through Syria's coastal mountains to the interior beyond.
