The disparity of wealth between the Czech Republic and its western neighbours has a marked effect on the border towns. For kilometres beyond the border, the roads are lined by markets, makeshift stalls selling cigarettes and alcohol, and brothels. But the most popular purchase by Austrian  shoppers is the garden gnome.
