Birth Notes: Wife - Ellen Sanderson
She was born at "Elderslie'.
Death Notes: Wife - Ellen Sanderson
She died of liver cancer at her sister and brother-in-law's house.
General Notes: Wife - Ellen Sanderson
Ellen was born seven months and 18 days after her parents arrived in N.S.W..
She was baptised twice, first when four months old at Narellan (with the father recorded as Samuel Sanderson) and again at East Maitland when she was eight and a half years old (with the father recorded as Lancelot).
Although the name Samuel on the first baptism raises the question of her paternity a calculation back from her birth date shows she must have been conceived on the ship her parent emigrated on (the Caroline), and been within 3 months of them leaving Durham to get married in London, which in turn was just 3 weeks before boarding ship. The passenger list for the Caroline does not list any Samuel. It may be that this was a name Lancelot went by or simply be a recording mistake.
Ellen married, just before her 17th birthday, in the same church at East Maitland where she had been baptised, St Peters Church of England. The Rev G K Rufden officiated and four witnesses names appear on the marriage record: her father Lancelot Sanderson, her sister Jane Sanderson, Thomas Smith and Mary Jennings.
Two years after her first husband's death (John Ballard) Ellen remarried in 1889 at Boggabilla on the Queensland border to Thomas Hamilton.
She returned to Maitland and was staying with her sister and brother in law, Jane and Alexander Wilkinson, in High Street West Maitland.
She died three years later, (1892) aged 63, after being ill with cancer of the liver for two years. (Lancelot is recorded as her father in her death record).
Notes: Marriage
James was baptised at age three months and for some unknown reason, Elizabeth was baptised again.
Mary Ann and Lydia Ellen were both baptised in St James Church at Morpeth. No father's name was recorded in the baptism register only that of the mother, Ellen Ballard a laundress, abode Morpeth.
Lydia Ellen died young at Morpeth in 1867 and was buried in Morpeth cemetery.
In 1870 another daughter, Emma, was born and baptised by the Methodist minister at Tamworth. The parents names, John and Ellen Ballard appear in the baptism record and the place of abode was Bendemeer in the Tamworth district. Emma died the same year, 1870. In the following year, 1871, Louisa Jane, married at Bendemeer.
It appears Ellen and John with their two daughters, Louisa Jane and Mary Ann, moved to the Peel River area between 1867 and 1870. It is not known what prompted the Ballard family to move but their 18 years old son, James, had taken a position with the post office in 1867 at Tamworth and this may have had some bearing on their decision.
Ten years later, in 1880, they were joined by their eldest daughter, Elizabeth, her husband and children.
Elizabeth and her family returned to Newcastle sometime before 1888 and perhaps Ellen and John did too, as John died aged 62 years in 1887 and was buried at Maitland.
Death Notes: Child - James Edward Ballard
heart failure
General Notes: Child - James Edward Ballard
James Edward was baptised in the Anglican Church of St James at Morpeth, which had been consecrated in 1837.
The town of Morpeth is named after Morpeth in the County of Northumberland in England. Morpeth, NSW and Morpeth, Northumberland are equal distances from Newcastle on Tyne (Northumberland) and Newcastle, NSW.
Morpeth was a private town from 1831 - 1841 and a toll of one penny per person and a halfpenny per wheel was levied on all travelers. The road from Maitland to Morpeth had been built by convicts.
Morpeth became the Hunter Valley's busiest port from the 1830's to the 1890's until the arrival of the Great Northern Railway.
During this time the town had eighteen inns, eight wharves from which thousands of newly arrived immigrants arrived to settle the Hunter Valley and New England areas, five Railway Stations, a flour mill, iron foundry and stores. Several of the old buildings remain and have been classified by the National Trust.
James moved to the northwest of NSW when a young man. He began working with the Postmaster General's Office in the Electric Telegraph Department on 1 April 1867 when he was 18.
He held the position of junior operator at Tamworth on a salary of 104 pounds per year.
On 1st March 1870 James transferred to Bendemeer, where his parents were living. His salary dropped to 52 pounds per year.
Later that year he took up the position of Telegraphic Station Master at Narrabri with a salary of 180 pounds.
Medical Notes: Child - James Edward Ballard
James had been ailing for six months with a heart condition and died peacefully in his sleep.
