2. Emigrated: From Liverpool, England, on 23 Jun 1857, from Melbourne. 6 Robert at 25 years old decided to set sail for Australia hoping to marry a cousin.
He sailed on the "White Star" (at the cost of £14)
On finding his cousin already spoken for, Robert set sail for New Zealand to 'marry the first girl he met there'. As his Australian cousin was eighteen and married in 1857, this story could well have been true. Robert can't have stayed in Australia long as the following year he was married in Auckland, New Zealand.

5. He worked as a Publican between 1867 and 1875 in Thames, Coromandel. "In approximately 1867/8 they shifted to Grahamstown, Thames where Robert built the 'Wharf Hotel' on the corner of Brown and Albert Streets. He kept and operated this for some years, continuing as a publican until around 1875." (VV)
Presumably Robert went to Thames because it was proclaimed a Gold field in February 1864, but although many miners made their way to the new fields, their influx did not reach 'rush' proportions until 1867-68, when miners from the West Coast of the South Island began to arrive.6. He worked as a Farmer between 1875 and 1879 in Manaia, Coromandel. 8 "The family's next move was to Manaia to farm where the last two children were born and also the eldest child Elizabeth became a married woman." (VV)

7. He worked as a Farmer between 1879 and 1888 in Mititai, Northern Wairoa. 9 "In 1879 Robert and Fanny and family left Thames behind as well as their eldest daughter, son-in-law and the first grandchild and made their way to the Northern Wairoa to farm at Mititai. They purchased 260 acres which they proceeded to clear and farm.
Their first home here (built by Robert) was four rooms downstairs and two upstairs. This is still standing and is now used as a woolshed.
After Robert and Fanny's family had grown up they sold the farm to Laura and George Wilkins. Their family still own and farm the land today" (VV)8. He worked as a Shopkeeper in 1890. 8 "The next venture of Robert and Fanny was a business on a six acre block (now Ratcliffs) with a general store, boarding house and stables. None of this now exists. When retiring age came they sold the business to him Montgomery grandchildren." (VV)

Burial Notes: Husband - Robert Vincent
His headstone reads: In loving memory of ROBERT VINCENT dearly beloved husband of FANNY VINCENT who departed this life on July 27, 1912. Aged 80 years 10 months.
Not gone from memories
Not gone from love
But gone to his heavenly home of love.
Burial Notes: Wife - Fanny Millis
Her headstone reads: In loving memory of FANNY beloved wife of ROBERT VINCENT who departed this life 4th July 1925 aged 86 years.
General Notes: Wife - Fanny Millis
Fanny is listed among the women entitled to vote in the first election open to women in 1893. She is recorded in the electoral roll as: Vincent, Fanny, residence - Mititai; electorate - Hobson; occupation - Housekeeper; roll number 3325.
Notes: Marriage
Robert worked as a carpenter/joiner and they lived around the Upper Queen Street area. While in Auckland their first four children were born: Elizabeth, Robert, Alice and Rodger.
In approximately 1867/8 they shifted to Grahamstown, Thames where Robert built the 'Wharf Hotel' on the corner of Brown and Albert Streets. He kept and operated this for some years, continuing as a publican until around 1875. Three more children (including Mary Catherine) were born in Thames, but sadly they lost their fourth child, Rodger, just seven days after the fifth was born, and this being a boy, they named him after his brother. Thus Thomas Roger came into being.
The family's next move was to Manaia to farm where the last two children were born and also the eldest child, Elizabeth became a married woman.
In 1879 Robert and Fanny and family left Thames behind as well as their eldest daughter, son-in-law and the first grandchild and made their way to the Northern Wairoa to farm at Mititai. They purchased 260 acres that they proceeded to clear and farm. Their first home (built by Robert) was four rooms downstairs and two upstairs. After Robert and Fanny's family had grown up they sold the farm to Laura and George WILKINS. Their family still owns and farms the land today. The original home is still standing and is now used by Reg and Molly WILKINS as a woolshed.
The next venture of Robert and Fanny was a business on a six-acre block (now RATCLIFFS) with a general store, boarding house and stables. None of this now exists. When retiring age came they sold the business to his MONTGOMERY grandchildren. They enjoyed good health for most of their lives.
General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Vincent
Elizabeth was known as a very strict lady and an excellent needlewoman, skills she passed on to her grandchildren.
General Notes: Child - Alice Ann Vincent
Alice must have been only three or four when the family's shift to Thames occurred. Unfortunately nothing is known of her life and schooling, which must have taken place in Thames.
She was around fifteen when she moved to the Northern Wairoa.
Alice must have had a great con-stitution as she had fourteen children. The first was born when she was only eighteen and the last when she was forty. Alice Ann breast fed all these children till well over the age of two and one child tells of how he remembers Alice feeding the youngest and then the next two youngest lining up to have a turn.
She was also a great cook and cake decorator, supp-lying not only her family but also most of the surrounding district with birthday and wedding cakes, and she passed this skill on to her daughters.

Death Notes: Child - Mary Catherine Vincent
She died of bowel cancer after a six-month illness while on the operating table at Auckland Hospital.
Burial Notes: Child - Mary Catherine Vincent
Her headstone reads: In loving memory of MARY CATHERINE dearly beloved wife of JOHN GIBBINS who died June 27th, 1925 aged 51 years. Thy will be done.
General Notes: Child - Mary Catherine Vincent
Mary was the sixth child of Robert and Fanny Vincent and was born at Shortland near Thames, where her father built and owned the Wharf Hotel, and later farmed at Manaia. When Mary was a young woman her family moved to a farm at Mititai, and she lived in the Northern Wairoa area the remainder of her Life. Mary Catherine is listed among the women entitled to vote in the first election open to women in 1893. She is recorded in the electoral roll as: Vincent, Mary Catherine, residence - Mititai; electorate - Hobson; occupation - Housekeeper; roll number 3327.
Medical Notes: Child - Mary Catherine Vincent
In 1923 tragedy struck the Gibbins family Mary Catherine had been unwell for a year or so, and had traveled down to Auckland Hospital for an operation, She collapsed in the operating theatre and died. A year after her death the family farm was sold and the family separated.
